Vilna Icon of the Mother of God

The Vilna Icon of the Mother of God is an ancient image of the Mother of God, according to legend, painted by the Evangelist Luke. The icon was for a long time the ancestral shrine of the Byzantine emperors. According to the most common version, in 1472 the icon was brought to Moscow by Princess Sofia Paleologus, who became the wife of the Grand Duke of Moscow Ivan III. There is also another version, which does not find wide support, that the icon passed to the Grand Duke of Moscow from the princes of Galicia, who once received it as a gift from the Byzantine emperors.

In 1495, the Grand Duke blessed his daughter Elena with this icon when she married the Grand Duke of Lithuania Alexander. In honor of the transfer of the icon to Vilna, a celebration was established on February 28 (February 15, old style). After Elena's death, the icon was placed over her tomb in the Prechistensky Cathedral in Vilna. After the conclusion of the Union of Brest, the icon passed to the Uniates. Subsequently, the icon was transferred to the Vilna Holy Trinity Monastery.

Twice the Russian tsars tried to return the icon to themselves:
during the Livonian War in 1569, they promised to release 50 captives for its return after the capture of Vilna in 1655 by the troops of Alexei Mikhailovich, on his instructions, the Vilna governor Mikhail Shakhovskoy tried to find the icon, but it was taken to the Uniate monastery in Krulevets (Königsberg).

After the fire of Vilna in 1741, the icon was transferred along with the metropolis to the Holy Trinity Monastery, which was then at the disposal of Catholics. The Prechistensky Cathedral was given to the Uniates.
In 1812 it suffered during the French invasion.
In 1839, the Holy Trinity Monastery, together with the Vilna Icon, was returned to the Orthodox. From that time on, the Vilna Icon of the Mother of God replaced the lost OSTROBRAMIAN icon for the monastery.
During the First World War, many shrines were evacuated from the front line, including the Vilna Icon. She, along with the relics of the Vilna martyrs, was brought to the Donskoy Monastery in 1915, and after that her further fate is unknown.

In the monastery, located on the outskirts of Vilna, there is the Ostrobramsky Vilna Icon. Her image is not similar to the icon of Hodegetria. On it the Mother of God is depicted in full height; She stands on the moon, and above Her most pure head the holy angels hold a royal crown. Cm.

Vilna Ostrobramskaya Icon of the Mother of God

(Celebration - December 29/January 8, as well as April 14/27 on the day of remembrance of the three Lithuanian martyrs)

In Vilnius, in the old part of the city, next to the Church of St. Theresa and the Orthodox Monastery of the Holy Spirit, there is a shrine revered by both Orthodox and Catholics - Ostrovorotnaya orOstrobramskaya Icon of the Mother of God, in the past also called Korsunskaya Blagoveshchenskaya(this is due to the fact that the icon is part of the composition of the Annunciation, and with the legend of its ancient origin from Korsun - the old Russian name for Chersonesus).

The icon is located in the chapel above the gate, popularly called the “Sharp Gate” or “Sharp Gate” (from Polish. "Brama"- gates). The name of the image that has long been placed above it comes from the name of the gate. It is considered one of the main Christian shrines of Vilnius and Lithuania.

Ostrobramsky gate with a chapel above it with the miraculous Ostrobramskaya icon of the Mother of God in Vilnius

Numerous traditions and legends are associated with the icon and the miracles it performs.

Origin

There are several legends about the origin of the Vilna Ostrobramskaya Icon of the Mother of God.

One of them is based on the legend that the icon miraculously appeared in Vilna, the capital of the Principality of Lithuania, on the Sharp Gate on April 14, 1431.

Another is that the icon was sent to the Grand Duke of Lithuania Olgerd by the Greek Emperor John Palaiologos as a sign of the prince’s acceptance of Christianity.

According to the third version, the image of the Mother of God was brought from Tauride Chersonesus (or Korsun) by the Grand Duke of Lithuania Olgerd among military trophies. It is known that in the years 1341-1373, Prince Olgerd made several successful campaigns against the Crimean Tatars. There is no direct evidence about when exactly the icon was brought. However, researchers are inclined to believe that this happened after the victorious campaign against Korsun in 1363. The version is based mainly on the testimony of the Wenden canon Daniel Lodziata, who lived in the 17th century. The historian Teodor Narbut, when writing the book “Ancient History of the Lithuanian People,” had at hand the manuscript of Daniel Lodziata, which he referred to twice. In a note dated 1653, Canon Lodziata reports the following: “The Grand Duke of Lithuania Olgierds enriched his treasuries with the treasures of Chersonese; his heirs distributed most of the church decorations to the churches of the city of Vilna. Among these treasures is a genuine image of the Blessed Virgin Mary; She seems to be standing in the face of the Divine messenger Archangel Gabriel. Now we see the Blessed One in the Carmelite chapel on the eastern gate of the city, usually called Sharp, which is documented by written evidence of the mentioned order." The testimony of Canon Lodziata is the most ancient of the surviving testimonies about the Ostrobramsk Icon of the Mother of God.

The existence of such information is also mentioned by the Carmelite writer Hilarion, who wrote about the Ostrobramskaya icon in 1761.

Catholics see in the Ostrobramskaya icon the image of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, which arose in Western European art in the second half of the 16th century.

The Polish version supports the hypothesis that the Ostrobramskaya Icon was painted in 1619 in Krakow in the workshop of Lukasz Porenbski. The theory was based on the similarity of the Vilna Ostrobramsky icon with the icon of the Virgin Mary from the Krakow Church of Corpus Christi, painted by Porenbsky.

All versions of the origin of the icon are of rather historical interest. For prayerful veneration, the question of who painted the icon and in what century is not of significant importance, since it is not the creation of human hands that is venerated, but the Prototype - the one whose image the icon painter embodied on the board. Revered by both Catholics and Orthodox - the Mother of God.

Story

It is believed that the holy icon was originally donated to the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity, built with the assistance of the wife of Grand Duke Olgerd, Princess Juliana Alexandrovna of Tver, and then placed above the Sharp Gate. There is evidence that in 1431 the icon of the Mother of God was already above the Sharp Gate.

The further fate of this image is closely intertwined with the fate of Orthodoxy in Lithuania. After the signing of the Lublin Union of Lithuania with Poland in 1569, church union with Rome began to be established in the Lithuanian lands. Many churches, including the Holy Trinity Monastery, passed into the hands of the Uniates, but the Orthodox managed to transfer the icon to the Church of St. Nicholas. However, in 1609, this temple also passed to the Uniates, and the icon returned to its original place above the Sharp Gate.

In 1624, a Carmelite monastery with the Church of St. was founded right at the gate. Teresia. The Carmelites built it in 1671. instead of the old one there was a new chapel, and the icon was turned to face the church. After the fire of Vilna in 1741. The icon was transferred to the Terezin monastery, and in 1744. again placed above the gate.

In 1812 it suffered during the French invasion, and in 1829. restored. After closing in 1832 Carmelite monastery, Terezin Church was renamed Ostrobramsky and remained under the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic clergy.

Subsequently, the icon stayed in the chapel of the Sharp Gates of Vilna, in a huge icon case. The icon was covered with a gilded robe, as well as many metal offerings in the form of images of saints and various parts of the body, which testified to the benefits of the Mother of God to the human race. A Latin throne was built under the icon, on which at least two liturgies were celebrated daily.

Iconography

The Ostrobramskaya Icon of the Mother of God belongs to a rare type of image of the Mother of God without a baby in her hands.

The icon is painted in tempera on two joined oak boards measuring 1.63 x 2 m and 2 cm thick, covered with a thin layer of soil. The chasuble was made in the Baroque style by Vilnius craftsmen at the end of the 17th century.

The Ostrobramskaya icon is part of the composition of the Annunciation, so the image was sometimes called the Korsun Annunciation Icon. The Virgin Mary is depicted at the moment of the appearance of the Archangel Gabriel to her; the corresponding part of the image of the archangel has been lost. On Her face is an expression of deep peace, concentration and virginal modesty. Above Her head, a two-tiered crown is attached to the chasuble - the baroque crown of the Queen of Heaven, the rocaille crown of the Queen of Poland. Long rays extend from the face in all directions.

Later (in 1849) a large silver vault was placed at the bottom of the icon (a gift given by vow, for the sake of healing or the fulfillment of some desire) in the shape of a crescent with engraved text in Polish: “I bring gratitude to You, Mother of God, for listening to my requests, and I ask You, Merciful Mother, to keep me as before, in the love and care of Your Most Holy WII1849.”

The Vilna Ostrobramskaya Icon of the Mother of God is a miraculous icon, widely revered by Orthodox and Catholics in Belarus, Lithuania, Ukraine and Poland. Currently, public worship before the Ostrobramskaya icon is performed according to the Roman Catholic rite, but Orthodox Christians continue to flock to this image with personal prayer and worship.

Lists of the Ostrobramskaya Icon of the Mother of God occupy their rightful place both in Orthodox churches in Lithuania and in the homes of believers.

Ostrobramskaya Icon of the Mother of God(lit. Ausros Vartu Dievo Motina, Polish. Matka Boska Ostrobramska, Belarusian. Matsi Bozhaya Vastrabramskaya) is located on the city gate of Vilnius (Ostraya Brama) and is revered by both Catholics and Orthodox Christians around the world.

There are several versions about the origin of the miraculous Ostrobramskaya Icon of the Mother of God, testifying to the great veneration of the shrine in both the Orthodox and Catholic worlds.

According to legend, she miraculously appeared on April 27, 1431 at the “sharp gate” of the fortress fence of the city of Vilna and therefore received the nickname “Ostrobramskaya” (“gate” - “gate”). This is an exceptionally beautiful and richly decorated icon.

The fate of the icon is complex and mysterious, which more than once passed from the hands of state officials into public ownership, from the possession of Orthodox Christians to the possession of Uniates and Carmelite monarchs, until it finally became the property of people of different faiths and different nationalities.

The appearance of the Ostrobramskaya icon in Vilna dates back to both the 14th and the first quarter of the 17th century. There are several versions of the origin of the shrine. Legend says that the icon of St. The Mother of God is revealed, and she appeared on April 14 (year unknown). Researchers of the history of the Ostrobramskaya icon I. Kozlovsky and Archimandrite Joseph (N. Sokolov) consider it likely that Prince Olgerd (Algirdas), who returned to Vilna with the triumph of the winner, could have brought it from the Crimean city Kherson (Korsun). Canon Daniil Lodzyata, who lived in the 17th century. narrates: “The Grand Duke of Lithuania Olgerd enriched his treasuries with countless Kherson jewelry. The family of this prince distributed most of the church decorations to the Orthodox churches of the city of Vilna, to which belongs Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Annunciation. located in the chapel above the city gate, usually called Sharp.” Tikhomirov’s book “The Life of the Most Holy Theotokos and Her Holy Icons” says: “...Prince Olgerd (Andrey), having brought St. icon in the city of Vilna, gave it to his wife Maria, who had this shrine in her possession, and the second wife of Grand Duke Andrei (Olgerd) Gediminovich Juliana, who received St. The icon, following the succession of its position in the palace, was dedicated to St. the icon of the Holy Trinity Church and monastery, which I especially revered.” (1884 2:44). A. Muravyov in “Russian Vilna” puts forward three versions of the appearance of the icon in the capital: a trophy of Prince Olgerd from his campaign in the Crimea, a gift from the Byzantine Emperor Palaeologus to Olgerd on the occasion of his baptism, and its miraculous appearance at the Sharp Gate in 1431. The author does not deny the fact that the icon has been revered since the 14th century.

The Annunciation Icon, according to the same researchers, was originally located in the Holy Trinity Monastery, bordering the Sharp Gate, then, as was customary, the brothers of the monastery placed it on the gate at the entrance to the city. With the transfer of the Holy Trinity Monastery to the Uniates, the Ostrobramskaya icon also passed to them. Since the founding of the Carmelite Monastery and the Church of St. at the Sharp Gate. Theresa (first half of the 17th century), the icon of the Virgin Mary became the property of the Carmelite monks.

From 1655 to 1661, Vilna was occupied by Russian troops, and the Carmelites decided to take the icon to a safe place. According to N. Sokolov, with the assistance of the Vilna tradesman Yu. Seledchik, the icon of the Mother of God and other valuable relics were sent to Konigsberg. There were rumors that on the way, Seledchik and his assistants were allegedly robbed by “Russian Cossacks.” Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich in June 1658, in a letter to the Vilna governor M. Shakhovsky, asked that St. be found. icon. Summoned for questioning, Seledchik admitted that he actually took the icon to Konigsberg and sold it there to Uniate monks. The search for the ambassadors was unsuccessful... But in 1661 the icon returned or, as they say, “reappeared”, and since the chapel, dilapidated from time to time, had already been dismantled, the icon was in the Church of St. Teresia.

In 1671, at the expense of the Vilnius people, a small wooden chapel was built, but not on the outside of the gate - now it was facing the city, and the icon was moved there, and the image of Salvador the Savior appeared on the outer wall of the chapel.

During the war with the Swedes, the passage under the Sharp Gate was occupied by their guard; the sentries behaved blasphemously during services, for which they paid dearly. The desecration of the shrine stopped when, during Holy Week, on Holy Saturday - on the morning of April 14, one of the heavy gates suddenly fell, crushing several Swedish soldiers to death.

The first miracle performed through an icon dates back to 1671 - saving the life of a child. The second miracle dates back to 1702.

Believers were convinced of the power of the miraculous icon during the fires of 1706 and 1714. The flame did not touch the icon, although the chapel itself burned to the ground in 1714. From that time on, for almost 30 years, the icon of the Mother of God was in the Church of St. Teresia. Thanks to the efforts of Father Telesphorus, in 1744 a new stone chapel was erected across the entire width and almost the full height of the entire Ostrobramsky tower, where a solemn procession transferred the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. At the same time, by decree of Pope Pius XII, it was announced that the icon belonged to Catholics.

The governor of Vilna N. Repnin in 1795 gave an order that “every male person of every rank, condition, religion and age, at any time of the day or night, should drive or pass through the Sharp Gates only by opening the top of his head, giving honor to them Ostrobramskaya shrine, and also that trade should not take place at the Sharp Gate out of respect for the shrine.” The chapel housed a large, sonorous organ, an excellent choir of singers and an orchestra of talented musicians.

In 1823, the Carmelites published the “Report on the miraculous icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the Sharp Gate” with many hymns and songs to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Brotherhood of Joseph was located at the church, whose members were supposed to: 1) Often pray for each other as workers of one common cause; 2) Help each other in every possible way; 3) Have an icon of the Ostrobramskaya Mother of God; 4) Confess and receive communion without fail every month.

The chapel received its current classic appearance after reconstruction in 1828–1830. Above the middle window there was an inscription in Latin: “Merciful Mother / We resort to your protection.” The top of the chapel ended with a stone turret with a bell. In 1830, a stone corridor was built from the church to the chapel. On the sides of the icon, between the columns, there are two gilded statues depicting St. Joachim and St. Anna - parents of the Virgin Mary.

At the bottom of the icon there is a large silver vota in the shape of a crescent with an engraved text in Polish: “I bring gratitude to You, Mother of God, for listening to my requests, and I ask You, Merciful Mother, keep me as before, in the love and care of Your Most Holy WII1849 "

The cornices and field of the icon are hung with many pendants ( votive offerings): crosses, orders, medals, images of parts of the human body, gold, silver, copper, depending on the wealth of the donors who received healing or relief after praying in front of the icon. Many of the votahs have inscriptions, mostly in Polish. All of them are arranged exquisitely symmetrically (there are about 8 thousand of them). Votes at one time could be purchased in a rich store with religious relics or from those selling them at the Sharp Gate. The ceiling of the chapel depicts the sacred ark and paintings of the Covenant.

The icon itself was carefully updated by the painter K. Rusiecki. After the frame was removed, according to eyewitnesses, an Orthodox hymn of praise in honor of the Virgin Mary, “The Most Honest Cherub,” was discovered, and the iconography was of the Byzantine-Slavic style. A new rich frame (riza) was made of gilded silver with forged roses, tulips and carnations. A large silver crescent was placed under the holy icon, and even lower was a throne with the crucifixion of the Savior.

The Most Holy Theotokos is alone in the icon, without the baby. It is slightly tilted to the right. The face expresses reverent, embarrassed humility, the arms are folded crosswise on the chest.

In the Orthodox understanding, the gesture of the crossed hands of the Mother of God on the Ostrobramsky image indicates the moment immediately preceding the Incarnation of the Word of God - the moment of the Virgin Mary’s acceptance of the Good News (“Behold the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me according to your word.” Luke I, 38). If we draw an analogy between the depicted gesture of the Mother of God and the sacred rites performed during the Divine Liturgy, we can recall the gesture of crossing the hands of the priest with the chalice and paten during the holy offering. Such a comparison reveals another meaningful facet of the Ostrobramsky image - the participation of the Virgin Mary in the mystery of the Atonement accomplished on the Cross. It is significant that a similar gesture is also found on such iconographic depictions of the Mother of God as “The Mother of God of Akhtyrsk”, where the Mother of God is represented at the foot of the Cross with her arms crossed on her chest.

The holy icon could have been half of a large icon of the Annunciation with the image of the Archangel Gabriel on it, and this second half may have been left in Kherson or presented by Olgerd himself to someone as an honorary gift. But there is no direct evidence of this yet.

In July 1927, under pouring rain, a solemn coronation of the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The celebration was attended by high-ranking persons: a diplomat of the Apostolic Capital (later Pope Pius XI), the President of Poland, more than 30 bishops, and members of the government. Before this, painstaking work was done to restore the shrine. For the worthy decoration of the image and the chapel, the residents of the region donated a large amount of jewelry. The previous crowns of gilded copper were replaced by gold ones, elegantly decorated with expensive stones. Jeweler K. Gorzuchowski and conservator Professor I. Rutkowski worked selflessly to update the salary.

A. Mickiewicz, J. Slovacki, J. Kraszewski, V. Syrokomlya, S. Moniuszko, who wrote 4 litanies in her honor, prayed before the miraculous Ostrobramskaya icon and dedicated their works to it.

In September 1993, in the chapel in front of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, I prayed Pope John Paul II. The Mass was broadcast via Vatican Radio to all continents, where numerous churches, chapels, altars were built in honor of the Ostrobramsky Virgin Mary - all over the world.

The entire icon is covered with countless metal offerings in the form of images of saints and various parts of the body, which serve as silent but vivid evidence of the benefits of the Mother of God once rendered to the human race.

The Ostrobramskaya icon is generally one of the most beautiful images of the Mother of God.

At the icon of the Mother of God of Ostrobramskaya they pray for God’s protection, pray for the happiness of the married couple and protection from interference in the family; from unexpected, unwanted visitors.

ABOUT The Strobram icon of the Mother of God is hung at the entrance to a home as a talisman and protection of the house from all evil.

It is good to have this icon at home; prayer at this holy image calms and pacifies the atmosphere in the family. Prayers are offered before her for mentally ill people, people prone to depression and despondency.

It is also good to give this icon to godsons and goddaughters - babies, so that their mothers pray for peace and joy in their souls.

The other two additions are less likely. According to one, the icon was sent to Olgerd by the Byzantine emperor John Palaiologos, when the latter learned of Olgerd’s adoption of Christianity. According to another, the icon miraculously appeared on the Sharp Gate on April 14 of the year.

In the possession of Roman Catholics

About a year ago, a Carmelite monastery with the Church of St. Teresia. Some time later, the Carmelites, taking advantage of the carelessness of the Basilians, took both the chapel and the icon into their own hands, and under their care the exclusive veneration of the Pointed Icon was resumed. In the year, the Carmelites built a new chapel in place of the old dilapidated one and, installing an icon in it, turned it towards the church and the city, inside. After the terrible fire of Vilna, the icon was moved to the Theresien Church, but in the year, with the restoration of the chapel, it was again placed above the gate.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Basilians tried to return the icon to their care, the dispute reached Rome, and the pope decided to leave the icon in the care of the Carmelite monastery, as it was closest to the chapel in which the icon is located.

This year the icon was somewhat damaged by the French. In the year the icon was renovated in the Catholic spirit, and, after removing the robe during the work, on the icon there was a song of praise to the Mother of God written in Slavic letters: “The most honorable Cherub and the most Glorious without comparison Seraphim.” With the closure of the Carmelite monastery in 2007, the Terezin Church was renamed Ostrobramsky Church and remained under the jurisdiction of the white Roman Catholic clergy. The icon is revered equally by Orthodox and Roman Catholics. According to the established custom in Vilna, not only Christians, but also people of other confessions bared their heads when passing through the Ostrobramsky Gate. You could always see people around the chapel, many of whom were standing right there, on the street, on their knees.

Modern veneration

In the same year, the only church at that time was founded in Kyiv in honor of the Vilna-Ostrobramskaya Icon of the Mother of God, where prayer services began to be regularly held in front of the revered copy of this image. Through the works of the rector of the temple, Archimandrite

Several stories have been preserved that tell us about the history of the origin of the image. In agreement with one of them, Iko-na was with-not-se-na from Kor-su-ni the great prince Ol-ger-dom and yes- re-na first su-pr-ge Maria. The second su-pr-ha led the prince-in-law, Iuli-a-niya, transfer-re-da-la icon to the Trinity Church, from-to-da once upon a time I fell into an hour at a sharp gate.

Another legend says that the icon was sent to Ol-ger by the Greek emperor John Pa-leo-lo-gom, when he learned about Ol-ger-dom’s adoption of Christianity.

According to the third source, a miraculously creative icon appeared at the sharp gates on the 14th of April 1431 One thing is certain - in 1431 the icon was already in the chapel near the Trinity Church in the Russian (or acute) -the city of Vilna and its name was Kor-sun-skaya.

In 1498, in Vilna, in connection with the emergence of a danger in the Pa-de-Niya Ta-Tar, new city ca-kas were blocked -men-the-walls, co-built gates with a tower, over which there was a clock-house. At this hour (sna-ru-zhi) the Kor-sun icon was placed, facing those who entered in town. Since the cha-so-owl was co-or-on at the “sharp” end of the city above the gate, then the name of the icon is step-by-step-but-for-me-there is something new: it began to be called Ost-ro-vo-ro-t or Ostrobram-skaya (bra-ma - vor-ta ).

During the union, the image of the Most Holy Bo-go-ro-di-tsy passed into the ownership of ba-zi-li-an, and -then, approaching in 1624, kar-me-li-tov, seized both the clock and the icon into his own hands. In 1671, kar-me-li-you arranged a new clock instead of the previous one (old-hoy) and, installing an icon in it, facing it towards the stone and the city, i.e. inside.

After the terrible heat of Vilna in 1714, the icon was transferred to the Terezinsky church, but in 1744 g., when the clock was again from the building, again located above the gate. At the beginning of the 19th century, the ba-zi-li-ans tried to return the icon to their own property, the dispute reached Rome, and pa-pa ordered to leave the icon on the obi-te-li kar-me-li-tov, since she was close to cha -Ovne, in which there was a holy image.

In 1812, the icon was a little damaged in the French, and in 1829, from the re-sta-vri-ro-va-na. After the closure of the Kar-Me-lit-monastery in 1832, the Te-re-zin ko-stele was re-named in Ostrobramsky and remained under the jurisdiction of the Roman spirit.

Iko-na-pi-sa-na on the du-bo-voy board, the picture is clear. The most pure Maiden is depicted at the moment of Bliss.

Iko-na-on-ko-in-chi-ta-et-sya and right-to-glory-us, and ka-to-li-ka-mi.

The mind is blessed by the possessions, the holy forefathers and prophets depicted Your wonderful Nativity and the mystery of Your Ever-Virginity in images, visions and dreams. The apostles of Christ, having foreseen in spirit that the image of the most holy face of the Most Pure Virgin of the Mother of God would be desired by believers, chose from among themselves the divine Luke, as a wonderful painter. And she, having asked for a Motherly blessing from You, supported by fasting and prayer, wrote the first icon of Your Lady, to which You Yourself said: with this image will be My grace and strength. For this reason, with tenderness and love, we sing to You:

Rejoice, high Ladder, seen by Jacob of old;

Rejoice, thou who unitest the earth with Heaven;

Rejoice, O God, who appeared on earth and bore in Your womb;

Rejoice, for the Burning Bush remains incorruptible.

Rejoice, luminous Cloud, the most worthless Lord of all, like rain on the fleece, falling on the earth.

Rejoice, wonderful Rod, adorning the flowers of the virtues of the faithful.

Rejoice, Life-Giving Source;

Rejoice, you who gave birth to the hungry and thirsty for eternal righteousness.
