Do-it-yourself brick barbecue oven with cauldron: from a simple model to a stove complex. How to build a brick barbecue with a cauldron or barbecue: tips, instructions, photos

A barbecue is often called a summer oven as it is ideal for cooking a delicious steak or fish in the fresh air for a large company. There are many models with different features, layouts and sizes. The basis of any of them is a roasting pan with a grate, where you can prepare a variety of dishes.

In this article, we will tell you how to build a barbecue with your own hands and attach additional functional blocks to it, for example, a cauldron or a smokehouse, with little investment of money and time.

BBQ options with cauldron and smokehouse

An outdoor brick barbecue with a cauldron and smokehouse is an excellent solution if you often gather outdoors with the whole family or a large group.

Peculiarities:

  • possibility of preparing first and second courses in the open air (shurpa, pilaf, vegetables). For cooking meat, both steel and steel skewers (or skewers) can be used, and for first and second courses a cauldron can be used directly;
  • massive appearance. As a rule, a separate stove is made for the cauldron. Thanks to this, you can simultaneously cook several dishes at once: on the barbecue and in a cauldron;
  • In the smokehouse you can smoke sturgeon, mackerel, trout and other fish. You can also make sausages, smoked jerky and chicken. With this tool, the list of recipes expands significantly.

Options for placing a brick barbecue oven

A brick barbecue oven for a summer cottage is perfect for summer picnics in nature. As a rule, such a complex is located:

  • in the garden, not far from the house;
  • in an extension to the house (open or semi-open veranda);
  • in the gazebo;
  • under a canopy near the house.

The best option is to place such a stove in the garden area in a gazebo or under a canopy. This way you can be protected from rain and wind during meals.

Today there are a huge number of options for brick barbecues. Choose a more convenient and sophisticated model for yourself, make a drawing and start construction work.

DIY brick barbecue oven with cauldron

In this article, we will tell you how to make a brick barbecue with your own hands with a cauldron. The most important thing is to understand the ordering scheme and the principle by which the bricks are laid, as well as where which ones are used. But that’s not all - it’s important to understand what mortar to use when laying. For example, cement mortar is not suitable for laying the inner verst, and clay-sand mortar is not used for the foundation.

Preparatory work for a barbecue with a cauldron

As part of the preparatory stage of the project, it is necessary to decide on the location where the building will be located. We recommend installing a barbecue next to a gazebo, terrace or next to a canopy on the patio of your site. This option is advantageous, since in case of bad weather, the interrupted feast can be held in a dry place. Also, do not forget about fire safety standards.

Drawing, diagram, dimensions

One of the most important steps in building your DIY BBQ oven is design. After all, its performance directly depends on how competently you calculate the dimensions of your structure.

As a rule, such structures have a length of 2 m 83 cm, a height of 2 m 47 cm and a width of 64 cm.

Here are the important points that you should pay special attention to when designing:

  • height of countertops and barbecue work surface. When preparing a project, you should focus on the average height of the person who will cook for it. As a rule, it is located at a height;
  • number of auxiliary elements (sink, tables for cutting meat and fish, upper shelves for food). Make sure that you have enough space for such things and that it will be located as practical and compact as possible;
  • Try to avoid sharp edges and excessive projections along all edges of the barbecue, as well as above the broiler. If you are careless, you can injure yourself with them, so it is worth thinking about this detail in advance.

Tools and materials

As a rule, novice builders ask themselves: how many bricks do you need for a barbecue oven? We specifically give you the quantity with a small margin, so that if several bricks break, you will not end up with a shortage.

For this project you will need:

  • Kiln bricks (Vitebsk) – 450 pcs.;
  • Ordinary building brick – 180 pcs.;
  • Brick M 100 – 175 pcs.;
  • Fireclay mortar – 150 kg;
  • Cement – 200 kg;
  • Fireclay clay – 40 kg;
  • Sand – 0.1 m3;
  • Steel corner – 40 x 40 mm. – 4 linear m;
  • Cast iron plate 410 x 710 mm. - 1 PC.;
  • Fire door 410 x 410 mm. - 1 PC.;
  • Cleaning door 140 x 140 mm. - 1 PC.;
  • Basaltine (basalt cardboard) – 4 sheets;
  • Asbestos (cardboard) – 1 sheet.

To make your own barbecue you will need the following tools:

  1. A trowel (even two are better, preferably made of stainless steel, then the tool does not rust during prolonged contact with the solution, and the mixture sticks less to the metal);
  2. Jointing – 5 mm;
  3. Building level;
  4. Square and a set of construction pencils;
  5. Pick for splitting and trimming bricks;
  6. Rubber mallet;
  7. Mesh with a cell of 4-5 mm for sifting sand;
  8. Grinder with a cutting wheel of 230 mm (stationary) and with a cutting wheel of 115 mm;
  9. Plumb;
  10. Pliers;
  11. Roulette 5 m;
  12. Drill;
  13. Jigsaw;
  14. Metal scissors;
  15. Protective glasses;
  16. Bucket for clay solution with a capacity of 10-12 liters;
  17. A bottle with a nozzle for spraying bricks with water;
  18. Carrying 12-15 m long for 3-4 sockets.
  19. To mix the clay-sand mortar, you need a box or container for 5-10 buckets;
  20. Wheelbarrow for transporting sand;
  21. Two shovels;
  22. Rake-order;
  23. Furnace hammer.

Foundation

It is necessary to prepare a monolithic foundation for a brick barbecue, using boards, a building level and cords for marking for formwork. The base must correspond to the dimensions of the oven + protrude no more than 100 mm on each side, and 250 mm from the front side.

A mini-pit approximately 400 mm deep is dug under the barbecue, into which 100 mm of sand is poured, then the same amount of crushed stone.

On top of the resulting structure, it is necessary to lay metal reinforcement with a cross section of 12-16 mm in height by 200 mm, welded in squares, as in the photo below.

Then, around the resulting cushion, it is necessary to build formwork from boards, about 300 mm high, so that it protrudes 100 mm above ground level. Now fill the entire structure with concrete mortar.

To prevent concrete from cracking, a plasticizer is added to it. The solution is further compacted using a wooden block. During hardening, the concrete must be watered and covered with film.

Three weeks after the concrete has dried, you can begin building the barbecue. In principle, it’s better to start with dry laying and numbering the bricks, especially if making a brick barbecue with your own hands is your first experience. It is necessary to tighten the marking cords in such a way that you understand where the future walls of the barbecue will be located.

Masonry mortar

Any building mixture contains fastening components such as cement, lime, clay. Of course, many people choose mortars with one tightening element and one filler (for example, sand), as well as with two components (for example, cement can be added to a lime-sand mortar).

A thin solution is a mixture prepared with excess filler; it cannot be durable and therefore practical.

A greasy mixture is a solution that contains an excess of astringent component; such a solution is very elastic and takes a long time to dry; it also makes masonry seams not look particularly beautiful.

It's easy to check the fat content. If the resulting mixture is normal, then it does not completely fall off the trowel; 1/3 or 1/4 of the volume should remain on the trowel. And the inscription with a finger or the handle of a trowel should only float slightly, but not disappear.

A mixture for barbecue brickwork is usually a combination of cement and sand mixed with water. Cement acts as a fastening material. A fairly well-known type of cement is Portland cement; it can be found in almost any construction supermarket.

To prepare the solution, we need to use river sand, it gives very good bonding and thorough hardening of the masonry.

Do not allow the mixture to harden; for a slower process of cementing the solution, add slaked lime or a plasticizer; it can be either liquid or powder. The second option is the most common today.

Pour some dishwashing detergent into the solution. This will strengthen its hold

The amount of water that should be added depends directly on the moisture content of the sand. As a rule, for one ten-liter bucket of cement, approximately one identical bucket of water is taken.

Do not forget to add water in small parts, you also need to constantly stir the resulting solution. The finished mixture should be used within two hours.

If you have a small amount of work, ie. If you are laying a small barbecue, it is better to use a ready-made mixture. During the construction of large masonry buildings, it is better to prepare the mixture yourself in a ratio of 1:3 (1 bucket of cement, 3 buckets of sand);

1/ Pour a bucket of mixture into the mixing container;

2. Fill half a bucket with water;

3. Mix the solution and add fine gravel (1/3 of the bag), then mix again.

4. Add half a bag of sand. Stir the contents;

To check the homogeneity of the solution, use a trowel to make a “ladder”. The resulting “steps” should not blur; remember that the surface of the mixture must be prepared smooth.

Which brick to choose?

Before starting construction, you need to know in advance which brick to choose for the barbecue oven. This is what we will do next.

Facing brick. Mainly used for exterior decoration of barbecues. Use it for decoration only.

Fireclay bricks are great for finishing a barbecue grill, the inside of a stove, and the lower tiers of a smoke box. This brick can withstand up to 1600 degrees.

Vitebsk brick. Its use is typical for laying the outer verst of a barbecue, but not a firebox, because it does not have the same fire resistance as fireclay.

Setting up a barbecue oven with a cauldron

A pre-prepared arrangement of a barbecue with a stove under a cauldron will make your future buildings correct from a technical point of view. The stove masonry is made of red brick of a grade no lower than M-100 and clay-sand mortar dissolved according to a special recipe. We recommend using M-300 brick.

The walls of the firebox and oven chamber are lined with refractory fireclay bricks. The internal surfaces of the oven are made smooth, without protrusions.

To equip the furnace, cast iron accessories are used: grates, combustion chambers, blower and cleaning doors, views, etc. Below is a step-by-step procedure for laying a barbecue with a cauldron stove:

Laying rows of bricks

Brickwork is made mainly from horizontal joints. They are filled with a special mixture that connects individual bricks into a single whole.

During the process of laying a barbecue, excess mortar protruding from the seams is removed by moving the trowel upward (if this is done while moving the trowel horizontally, the bricks will be stained). After that, the so-called jointing is performed. Thanks to this operation, the wall acquires an attractive appearance, and, in addition, correctly embroidered seams are less susceptible to weather factors.

Basically, special tools are used for jointing, called, like the work for which they are intended, jointing. You can give the seam the desired shape using a trowel or a wooden plank.

To begin, unstitch the vertical seams of the masonry and run the tip of the trowel up or down along them. When you sew horizontal seams, use the full length of the trowel, press firmly and pull it back in a sliding motion.

Laying and alignment of bricks

Construction of a brick oven for a cauldron

After you have laid out the main building (barbecue), you need to repeat the procedure for the extension - the cauldron. Laying brick barbecue ovens with your own hands, as well as extensions to them, has the same rules:

We lay the first rows of the barbecue stove and cauldron. Let's level them. On the barbecue side we make a wall of two bricks.

We are constructing the side walls of the complex on the second and third levels. Narrow the base of the stove for the cauldron. In the future, the firebox will be located here. At the same stage, we install the combustion and cleaning doors.

We make the base for the cauldron. using fireclay bricks on fireclay refractory mortar.

We use a grate for blowers.

We are building walls. A semicircle should appear with height.

We lay out the remaining vertical walls and leave room for the chimney. Also, we put iron rings in the hole on the top row.

After laying the stove under a brick cauldron with your own hands is completed, you should leave the building for a week and a half so that the mortar dries. Afterwards you can move on to cladding and decoration.

Red brick cladding

If you are on a budget but want to brighten up your barbecue, laying red brick on the outside is the best option. We recommend laying it in one layer on top of the outer row.

  1. Apply a thin layer of concrete mortar to the brick;
  2. Place it against the side wall of the barbecue and press down;
  3. Remove any protruding parts of the mixture using a trowel.

Completion of finishing

There are several ways to finish a brick barbecue with a cauldron stove.

The most common and hygienic is tiling.

  1. Clean the outer surface;
  2. We screw 5 mm thick self-tapping screws into the spaces between the bricks in the barbecue. They should protrude by 2 mm;
  3. We screw the tiles using thin wire;
  4. We pour fireclay clay into the cavity between the tiles and the brick. It will allow you to retain heat for several hours after the stove has been lit.

Another option is plastering. If the solution is prepared correctly, this finish lasts quite a long time.

  1. Prepare the sides for applying plaster. Remove all roughness and debris;
  2. Apply a thin layer of primer to the walls;
  3. We apply plaster. Layer thickness – approximately 0.5-1 cm;
  4. We level the sides using a building level (regular or laser).

Exploitation

When using an outdoor brick barbecue oven, pay special attention to the following points:

  1. A sufficient amount of air must enter the firebox, otherwise the fuel will not burn completely. In this case, too much soot will form on the walls;
  2. The draft must not be allowed to tip over. To do this, you need to ensure that the oven damper is constantly open;
  3. You need to heat your barbecue with wood from deciduous trees or specially made briquettes and pellets;
  4. When cooking meat, it is best to use special devices for better roasting of meat. Ideal for this.

Brick barbecue oven projects

In conclusion, we invite you to familiarize yourself with some of the projects. Each of them is unique in its own way, be it a Finnish brick barbecue oven or a mini brick barbecue oven.

Each project requires some time, but if you approach the process seriously and with all your heart, you will get a wonderful barbecue that will delight you and your loved ones.

Proper laying of a brick stove is not only an architectural balance that preserves the durability of the structure, but also a guarantee of functional benefit and safety during operation. Setting up a barbecue is necessary even for an experienced master. Knowing each brick row with a given number of elements and exact location gives an invaluable effect in the speed of doing the work with your own hands and a high-quality result.

The term “ordering” characterizes two construction concepts used in one architectural field – bricklaying. It is this division that sometimes confuses a novice stove maker. It is important to keep ready both definitions, which by their name provide not only control of the masonry in rows, but also the order in which the masonry is executed.

If there is not enough time to build a stove, we recommend contacting the company: “Fireplace Ochag”.

Test device

The original professional word “ordering” describes the elementary device necessary to control the height and horizontality of each row of bricks.

The device consists of two vertical slats 1.5-2 m high, fixed on opposite sides of one wall to the bottom rows with two brackets each. The latter are used to safely connect the lath without bolts, so as not to “injure” the fresh brickwork.

The minimum number of tiers that allows you to establish an order is 2. Since the masonry is done with your own hands in a checkerboard pattern, one bracket engages with the brick of the first row on one side of the masonry, and the second with the element above, but on the adjacent side - this is the same for both racks. The cross-section of the ordering strip is not specified: the thickness must be such as to withstand the tension between the two parts of the installation. As a rule, 50×50 bars are chosen.

Control is carried out by applying notches to the row every 77 mm in height. These intervals require the greatest possible accuracy, since the construction balance of the masonry depends on them. If on one rail at least one of the intervals differs by 1 or 2 mm from the opposite side, the horizontality will be disrupted. The distance 77 mm consists of the height of the brick and the thickness of the connecting seam: 65+12 mm.

A cord called a mooring is stretched from notch to notch. It allows you to track the accuracy of the laying of each brick in a row. If the first tiers were folded using a level, the pier serves them in the next stages. A tension bolt is provided at the place where the bracket is attached, either in row or nearby. It is enough to screw it in on one side, and the mooring can be completely straightened between the bars. Stretching the cord is extremely important so that there is no sagging in the middle of the masonry and horizontality is most accurately tracked.

Sometimes the order is installed on three or even four brick walls. This helps to track the symmetry of sizes and angles, as well as maintain the horizontal position of the masonry on all its sides at once.

You can make the control device yourself. The device consists of simple elements that literally lie underfoot during construction work.

The difficulty lies only in ensuring the accuracy of the order itself - every millimeter and degree is important. A homemade device will be useful if the work on a brick barbecue is one-time. For example, for your own gazebo.

The meaning of schematic structure

The second meaning of the word “order” appeared thanks to popular vernacular. Control of the rows is no longer carried out by height and horizontality, but by quantity and location. The barbecue order is a scheme according to which step-by-step masonry is carried out.

The drawings help both the novice stove maker and the experienced professional equally. If the diagram will help a beginner understand the design of the stove and become a useful instruction for carrying out work with his own hands, then the ordering master will come in handy in quickly implementing similar projects. Once drawn up, the drawings will serve as a multiplication table for a schoolchild - all tests are “5”, or from time to time a major barbecue with a cauldron or Russian oven.

Balanced base

The basis for a balanced masonry is the correct foundation. – a heavy structure, if we consider the load per unit area. In this regard, it requires a monolithic base. A sand cushion, crushed stone, reinforcement cage, high-quality cement mortar - all this will make the foundation strong and durable, but it is equally important to take into account its balance:

Construction of the furnace in order

Before laying refractory bricks with your own hands, you need to carefully consider the structure of the barbecue. The better the step-by-step diagram is presented, the less likely it is to make mistakes. Ordering also helps to calculate the amount of building materials in advance, draw up an estimate and purchase the required volume on time. This is an efficient approach that eliminates delays due to element shortages.

Having prepared for the work with your own hands, you can begin the construction process in a coordinated and thoughtful manner according to the following scheme:

Masonry drawings for arranging a brick barbecue are specific plans or diagrams created specifically for convenience in the process of assembling the structure. For any arrangement, a general plan drawing is required to familiarize yourself with the dimensions of the barbecue and calculate the amount of material for it.

The foundation, of course, is behind a monolithic foundation; without a reinforced foundation, a serious structure cannot be erected. It is also important, before working with rows, to place several layers of insulation on the already dried foundation to avoid moisture build-up.

We work in order

We start from the first row, where it is important to maintain the level. We are talking about floor level if construction is above the natural horizon. It is most convenient to align the cord along the planes and only then use a trowel, applying cement or clay mortar to the base.

The simplest arrangement of a brick barbecue

If the first row is usually just a plane made of brick, then further it can be more complicated, because some barbecue designs are built with a cauldron or an additional oven.

An example of arranging a barbecue with a cauldron or outdoor oven

Description of the masonry

From the sixth we move on to the butts (transverse masonry). It should turn out that the brick rests on the ledges on each side (plane). They are necessary for the arrangement of the grille and its correct location in the future.

Continue the next 3-4 rows of half a brick, maintaining the original thickness. And from the tenth row it is necessary to repeat the order of the barbecue oven, with the expectation of repeating the transverse laying for the grates.

Although brick protrusions can be bypassed by replacing them with steel corners or other fasteners. It is important that this point is thought out at the time of laying outdoor barbecues, then you can do it yourself reliably, taking into account the space for a smokehouse or additional compartments.

They often try to make a corner option like an extension, when the main stove is simply placed on the foundation, and a barbecue or a place to fire a cauldron is laid out separately on the corner. Everything is simple here: we place a wall with a height below the working plane, ending the last row with bonded masonry. A support for a stone countertop, for example, is placed in a similar way. But such material is not always affordable; it is often replaced with wood covered with tiles.

Variants of orders and schemes

Diagram for a barbecue or fireplace stove

Setting up a grill hearth similar to a barbecue for a gazebo

How it works in practice

The order is not difficult to imagine in diagrams created for construction literature. But in reality everything looks much more interesting.

Start work like this

This is the base and space for fuel. Then you need to raise small walls, create spaces for the door and ash pan

After this, you need to arrange the overlap of the lower tier using three rows of bricks. Then it will be possible to set up a barbecue next to the firebox, just under the ash pan.

Let's just say that, having completed this work, the first cycle is downloaded. You can start creating the structure from the top, where there will be protrusions or rods.

The most important point when studying the order is that you need to use a refractory type of brick, which cannot be laid on ordinary clay.

You need to purchase a heat-resistant solution or special clay.

The plan also includes a chimney installation on almost every brick BBQ project. But it is advisable to do it after the finished structure has completely dried. The way out of the situation when there is no time and excess material is to construct a frame from reinforcement and boards. It turns out to be a kind of formwork into which concrete is poured. It's cheaper and faster.

Technical points

A simple DIY brick structure is sometimes placed on a poured foundation slab, but does not use mortar. This approach is optimal for those who are not confident in their abilities, want to save money, or simply test a country version of a barbecue or barbecue.

It will come out quite original, and the order is the same, only this can be disassembled if necessary, enlarged in size, or even assembled into stacks of bricks

There is only one minus - the lack of good protection from the wind, because there is no usual arch. And if the structure is not assembled under a canopy, then the heat from the coal will have to be protected during the rainy season.

A barbecue without a solution, a smokehouse and a cauldron can be assembled by eye, but they always try to calculate their actions in advance, calculating similar plans or drawings on paper

Results

Simple barbecue ovens and barbecues made of bricks are not built without several procedures that have been tested in practice. Yes, you can build for luck if you have extra money. But the main mistake in this case is that nothing can be changed without damaging the stove. Therefore, before planting on the solution, they try to measure each row dry, correcting the defects, working on inaccuracies.

Outdoor recreation in a country house or cottage is not complete without cooking in the open heat. You won’t surprise anyone with banal kebabs or baked vegetables, but in such conditions you can cook real pilaf or other complex dish only in a special fryer. This is a barbecue oven, the design of which includes the installation of a cauldron.

General structure of a barbecue oven with cauldron and sink

A barbecue oven is a capital structure for cooking various dishes over the heat of hot coals. The peculiarity of this installation is that the cooking process is carried out on a metal grate without an open flame, and the fryer is not covered with a lid.

In terminological terms, the concept of “barbecue” means a method of baking meat or vegetable products over smoldering coals at a temperature in the range of 100–130°C.

For the convenience of cooking, such devices are modernized by adding additional compartments and installations. A design that combines a barbecue oven, a roasting pan with the ability to install a cauldron, and an extension with a sink has become very popular. It should be noted that the roasting pan can be easily converted into a regular stove if you remove the cauldron and place cast iron rings of different sizes on the hole, forming a continuous surface.

A large barbecue oven has many positive and several negative qualities.

Table: advantages and disadvantages of a barbecue oven

prosMinuses
  • reliability and durability of the structure;
  • fire safety, since no open flame is used during the cooking process;
  • the special taste of cooked dishes, and the crispy crust retains the natural moisture in the food;
  • visual appeal, thanks to which it will decorate any area;
  • the ability to build a canopy or gazebo over it, so that heavy rain will not interfere with cooking and communicating with friends;
  • individual design, showing creative thinking, you can build a structure according to your own design;
  • the ability to use different cooking techniques;

Preparation for construction: drawings and optimal dimensions

The construction of a barbecue oven structure must be preceded by preparatory measures for choosing a construction site, drawing up drawings and diagrams.

When choosing a site for construction, you must be guided by the following rules:

  1. There must be a distance of at least 5 m between the furnace complex and the residential building.
  2. Access to the kitchen should not be too far from the structure. If necessary, they can be located under one roof.
  3. The building should be located away from neighbors’ residential buildings, as odors and smoke can irritate them.
  4. The decision of all construction issues should be entrusted to specialists.
  5. Before construction, it is necessary to conduct a soil study and, in accordance with its quality, select the appropriate type of foundation.

The size of the future barbecue oven plays an important role.

If the surface with the sink, barbecue grill or cauldron is placed too low, then after a while your back will get tired, and if the working surfaces are located too high during the cooking process, you will not be able to avoid burns.

To find the golden mean, you should adhere to the rule - the optimal height of the working surface of the barbecue oven should be slightly below the level of the elbows of the cook.

If the width of the selected area does not allow making a wide structure, then this optimal parameter can be considered a value of 240–250 cm. Such a stove complex will be compact and convenient. The width of the roasting pan should be 63–65 cm.

The size of the stove for the cauldron will be 3.5 bricks on each side, which corresponds to 87 cm.

Selection of material, calculation of required quantity

Various materials are used to build barbecue ovens, including brick, metal, stone and clay.

The latter can be used to make a monolithic structure.

Clay was used in ancient pottery. The first historical mentions of such structures were found in the 3rd millennium BC. Nowadays, this type of furnace is used extremely rarely. To make it you need a special type of fatty clay.

Stone barbecue stoves are more common, but are not widely popular, since their construction requires rubble stone, sandstone and limestone. The inconvenience of this material lies in its different shapes, which is why each element has to be carefully selected to each other.

Furnace complexes made of metal are widely used nowadays due to the relative cheapness of the material and the ease of its processing. A large number of ready-made designs go on sale. At home, such structures are made in compact sizes.. For this, steel sheets or pipes with a thickness of at least 5 mm are used. A popular option is to use old propane tanks. The wall thickness and dimensions of these containers are suitable for the manufacture of such structures.

The most convenient, high-quality and durable material for a stove is brick. It has standard sizes and shapes.

It should be noted that not any type of brick is suitable for building a barbecue oven.. For example, silicate cannot be used. For braziers, ovens and other structures operating at high temperatures, fire-resistant red and fireclay materials are used. The combustion chamber is lined only with the second type.

In addition to the main building material, you will need:

  1. Concrete mixture for laying the foundation.
  2. Boards or plywood panels for making formwork.
  3. Reinforcing bars for the construction of a metal frame that strengthens the concrete base.
  4. Sand and gravel for the foundation.
  5. Wire, plastic clamps or a welding machine to secure all connections of the reinforcement structure.
  6. Waterproofing material for foundations. For this, thick polyethylene or roofing felt is usually used.
  7. Metal sink, faucet, drainage devices, rubber hose.
  8. Metal corners for installing a countertop with a sink, fasteners for a barbecue grill and other structural elements of the stove.

All these materials require careful calculations.

Bricks, clay mortar

To build a barbecue oven you will need 810–820 fireproof red ones, as well as 30–35 fireclay ones. The thickness of the seams between them is 3–5 mm.

Concrete, sand, gravel

Since the barbecue oven will combine several working areas, its design will occupy a large area of land. In order for this complex to be stable, it is necessary to make a permanent foundation. A slab foundation is suitable as such.

To calculate the exact amount of concrete, you need to know the total volume of the base. To do this, you need to use a special geometric formula. Since the foundation will be made in the form of a flattened parallelepiped measuring 270x100x20 cm, the volume of the concrete mixture must be calculated using the formula V=h³, where h is the length of the side of the figure. Using an example, it will look like this: 2.7∙1.0∙0.2=0.54 m³.

Using the same formula, the volume of sand and gravel is calculated. The base requires a layer of each material 10 cm thick. It follows that sand is required: 2.7∙1.0∙0.1=0.27 m³. This is the same value for gravel.

Armature

To prevent the foundation from cracking under the weight of the stove, it is necessary to strengthen it. For this you need a metal frame. For its manufacture, reinforcing bars with a thickness of 12 mm are used. The metal structure is a three-dimensional frame in the form of two gratings, which are connected to each other by pieces of reinforcement 15 cm long. The size of each cell in the frame is 10x10 cm.

It is more convenient to calculate this material in linear meters. To do this, it is necessary to determine the total length of all the reinforcement for the frame. To do this, you must first calculate the number of rods located along the length of the frame, then along the width and between the gratings.

The rods are calculated according to the length of the structure. The length of each of them is 95 cm. It is necessary to determine how many rods will be placed along the length of the foundation if the distance between each of them is 10 cm. For this you need 270:10 = 27 pieces. It is necessary to add one more rod, since it will close the structure from the other edge of the frame. To find out how much it is in linear meters, you need 27∙0.95=26.6 m.

The same calculation principle is used to calculate the amount of reinforcement along the width of the base. For this, 100:10=10 pieces, in linear meters it will be: 2.7∙10=27 m.

It is necessary to add these values to get the overall parameter for one grid: 26.6+27=53.6 m.

Since the design provides two gratings, then 53.6∙2=107.2 linear meters.

Now you need to calculate the number of reinforcement elements connecting the two parts of the frame. These rods are located along the perimeter (at the intersection of each rod), as well as inside the structure, at a distance of 90 cm from each other in rows.

From previous calculations, the number of rods along the width and length of the frame is known: 28 + 10 = 38 m. This value must be doubled, since the elements are located along the perimeter of the structure: 38∙2 = 76 pieces. Inside the frame there are two more rows of 10 pieces, so 76+20=96 pieces. It is easy to determine this value in linear meters: 96∙0.15=14.4 linear meters.

Waterproofing for foundation

To calculate the required amount of waterproofing material, you need to find the area of the base. The area of this figure is determined by the following formula: S=a∙b, where a is the width, b is the length of the rectangle. Let's substitute the values: 2.7∙1.0=2.7 m².

Step-by-step instructions for making a barbecue oven with a cauldron

When the site for construction has been selected and prepared, drawings and diagrams of the future structure have been drawn up, and the necessary materials have been purchased, you can begin the actual construction of the barbecue oven. To do this you need to do the following:

  1. In the selected area, make markings for the foundation of the future furnace. You can use cords and stakes for this.
  2. In accordance with the markings, dig a pit 35 cm deep. Its bottom must be leveled and compacted.
  3. Pour sand inside the pit to form a uniform layer 10 cm thick. The material will be better compressed if it is wetted.
  4. Pour the same layer of gravel on top.
  5. Make formwork from edged boards or thick plywood. Its height must be at least 25 cm so that the level of poured concrete does not reach the top edge of the side.
  6. Place the formwork on the bottom of the pit parallel to its walls.
  7. Make a three-dimensional frame with cells measuring 10x10 cm from reinforcing bars 12 mm thick. The structure should not touch the bottom, so place wooden blocks or fragments of bricks under it in a checkerboard pattern.
  8. Pour the concrete mixture. For the foundation, use cement grade M 250. The reinforcement cage must be completely hidden under the liquid mortar.
  9. Cover the foundation with waterproofing material. To do this, use roofing material or thick polyethylene. This is necessary so that the moisture inside the concrete evaporates evenly. If you leave the foundation uncovered, the top layer will dry out quickly. In the future, this may cause the base to crack. The concrete mixture will harden in 4-5 days. For the first two days, you need to open the waterproofing and water the base with water every 10–12 hours. Polyethylene or roofing felt prevents moisture from evaporating quickly. This ensures uniform hardening of the slab foundation.
  10. When the base is dry, it must be covered with a layer of roofing material or other waterproofing material, and only lay brick on it. The first 6–7 rows are not held together with cement mortar.
  11. The barbecue oven must be arranged in accordance with the diagram. Each subsequent row must be shifted relative to the previous one in a checkerboard pattern. This method has a name - half-brick masonry. This ensures a reliable bond of the material.
  12. For the combustion chamber it is necessary to use fireclay bricks. It can withstand temperatures over 1600°C. Check each row for vertical and horizontal using a building level, square and plumb line.
  13. Create places for ash pans and doors.
  14. For a cauldron, it is necessary to make a combustion chamber in the form of a straight or tapering cylinder. This part of the furnace is made of fireclay bricks.
  15. Construction of the chimney can begin only after the mortar in the masonry has completely hardened. The pipe can be built not only from brick. Metal is often used for this.
  16. Install faucet and sink. Connect the water supply hoses.
  17. After the solution has completely dried and the furnace structure has shrunk, you can begin finishing it. For this you can use stone, brick, tiles or whitewash.
  18. The finishing material must be attached to the prepared base. To do this, you must first plaster the surface using a mounting mesh with a cell size of 10x10 mm.
  19. If you choose whitewash, then you need to use one that does not get dirty. Slaked carbide or lime salt are suitable for this.
  20. To decorate with stones and tiles, it is enough to clean the surface from dust and use ready-made adhesive mixtures.

Nuances of use

In order for the barbecue oven and its working elements to please you for a long time, you need to use it correctly:

  1. The heat will be uniform if you first remove the old ash.
  2. Smoke from residues under the ash pan from previous cooking can spoil the taste of the dish.
  3. Before use, a new cast iron cauldron must be lubricated with sunflower oil, and then heated on the stove for 20 minutes. Add oil if necessary. After the specified time, leave the cauldron to dry, then drain the remaining oil. Wipe the inside with a dry cloth. It is now ready to use. Each subsequent dish cooked in it will be tastier.
  4. It will be more comfortable to use such a stove if the floors in front of it are laid with stone, and a canopy or roof is made over the brazier.

You can build a barbecue oven with your own hands, if you strictly follow the instructions and treat this process responsibly. This design will serve you for a long time and will fully meet your expectations.

And you can bake a stove for a brick cauldron with your own hands without much effort, and the provided drawings and photos will help you understand the construction process. This way you will save money that would have been spent on craftsmen, and also show your own ingenuity.

Brazier with stove under a cauldron

Construction options

Initially, you need to decide which construction option you prefer. After all, there are two types:

  1. a standard brick grill with a special device for hanging a cauldron;
  2. complex design of a barbecue and a brick oven for installing a cauldron.

Construction of a standard roaster with installation of a pot

This option is the easiest and simplest. The entire building will consist of just a few components:

  • two cameras;
  • smoke channel;
  • smoke collector

Using such a construction project, it is necessary to create from bricks. But don’t forget to build a special device on which you can hang the cauldron in the brazier itself.

It is worth considering the fact that the boiler should be located directly above the fire, and at the same time not block access to the firebox in order to easily add firewood.

The device itself for placing the cauldron must be created according to this algorithm.

  1. Take two metal corners and embed them into the structure. Embed it so that the corner itself is directed downwards.
  2. The corners themselves should be placed on both sides of the side walls. But it is necessary that the corners protrude from the walls by 10-15 cm.
  3. To make their fixation as strong as possible, make special slots in the bricks. In this case, each of the corners must be inserted into the slots. Make sure the passage is tight.
  4. The metal pipe must be attached to the corners by welding.
  5. The final step is to install a metal hook in the middle of the attached pipe.
  6. It is on this hook that the cooking pot will be placed.

Classic grill with cauldron

Building such a barbecue with a pot will not be difficult for anyone. But at the same time, not everyone will like this design, because the number of dishes that can be prepared here is not so huge.

This structure is perfect for cooking food with the aroma of smoke. Therefore, it is good to use it to make triple fish soup, grenadier kulesh and other similar dishes. But it is impossible to make pilaf or oriental dishes in such a design.

Creating a brick grill with a cauldron stove

Now let's talk about how to put a brick grill with a stove under a cauldron in order to cook many interesting dishes. In this version there is a brick grill, and next to it is a traditional stove for a cauldron. Such structures are separated from each other, which guarantees the quality of cooking. But to combine them into a single complex, you need to make a single seam. You can see how the connection is made in the video. Drawings and photos will also help you figure out how to make a stove for a brick cauldron.

This structure has significant advantages over the options presented above:

  • the construction process is quite simple, even an inexperienced master can implement it;
  • two designs do not have complex designs and drawings;
  • you can choose a separate project for each part of the building in order to maximally customize it to your needs;
  • construction takes place separately for each part, which greatly simplifies execution.

When creating a stove for a cauldron, you can use several stove options. A stove with a cylindrical firebox, as in the photo, is considered a classic. It is more difficult to build than the standard wood-burning option.

Cylindrical firebox

A wood-burning firebox involves a laying in which the last brick joins the rows below and creates a square-shaped firebox. But the standard option is both simpler and more economical, since in the second case you will have to use a huge amount of firewood.

Construction requires the following materials:

  • brick (refractory and fireclay type);
  • clay;
  • reinforced mesh;
  • sand;
  • cement;
  • wooden boards;
  • roofing felt;
  • steel sheets;
  • metal corners;
  • blower door and firebox door;
  • grate;
  • stove for cauldron.

Step-by-step instructions for such construction are as follows.

Choosing the order and the project itself

Some projects can be implemented with the creation of a single foundation. The depth is calculated with emphasis on the grill part (it has superior dimensions). For example, a grill with 33 rows. Then the foundation will be about half a meter thick. But the pit needs to be made at least 10 cm deeper in order to lay out a sand layer. This scheme will help make the base more durable.

In addition, the foundation must protrude beyond the entire structure by 10 cm on all sides.

Creation of a pit with the formation of formwork

Having created the formwork, you need to fill it with sand.

Pouring the foundation

Stones 5 cm high are laid out on the sand. A mesh of reinforcing rods is laid on top. The rest of the space is completely filled with cement mortar. The entire fill should protrude 10 cm above ground level.

Waterproofing design

As soon as the foundation is completely dry, roofing felt is laid on it. There must be two layers of this material to provide the necessary insulation.

Construction of a barbecue

Masonry begins with laying out the first row, and no sand-clay mortar is used. Initially, bricks are laid in the corners to create a rectangular shape. You need to pull a rope between these bricks and lay out the rest of the bricks in a row. To check the correctness of the process, you need to measure the diagonal distances. If they match, then laying on the cement mortar begins. In case of discrepancy, errors must be corrected.

Scheme for creating a barbecue oven

The street version of creating a barbecue oven is as follows.

  • Two continuous rows are laid out. Three walls are laid out, the width of which is two bricks, which are placed around the perimeter of the formed rectangular structure. The front wall is not being built.
  • The formation of the arch begins from the tenth row. This is where the cutouts are made in the brick. This is necessary so that you can install metal corners or a sheet of steel.
  • Then there is a continuous masonry in two rows. The top one will become the frying bottom. Here you need to use fireclay bricks. The walls in part of the brazier are also constructed from it.
  • Next, eight rows are laid out. In this case, all the walls of the grill are formed, except the front. The top view will be U-shaped.
  • In the twenty-first row it is necessary to cut grooves to place the corners. The bricks placed on them will form the front of the grill.
  • Two more rows are laid out. At the same time, the roof of the brazier is created.
  • Five more rows of masonry complete the creation of the brazier. In this case, the structure narrows towards the top.
  • The chimney channel is laid out.

Sequence of construction of a stove for a cauldron

To create the second part of the complex, follow these step-by-step instructions.

  • The first row is made of red bricks. You should start with a whole brick (the diagram applies to all odd rows).

Stove-fuel diagram

  • Laying bricks around the entire perimeter. Fireclay bricks will be placed inside. And it starts from half, as in all even rows. The second row is the bottom for the firebox. Don't forget to leave space at the bottom for the ash, so you need to build a door for the ash pan.
  • Third row. Solid (not including the ash pan). Here the grate is mounted into the grooves created in the brickwork. This row will fix and block the installed door.
  • 4-5 rows are laid to form holes for the fire door and chimney. Here there is a division into the internal and external parts of the future furnace with a small gap. The central zone forms a square with a circle in the center. The firebox is a circle. The center is created from fireclay bricks.
  • The sixth row is laid out according to the same principle as before. But here it is necessary that the brick blocks the chimney opening. Also, the brick must tie up the previous seams.
  • The seventh row should cover the combustion door and secure it. In the ninth you need to make a hole so that flue gases can escape out.
  • In the eleventh row, you need to create a circulation hole in the crucible, or rather its part in front.
  • The last twelfth row must secure a plate, which has a hole for installing a cauldron.

After completing the construction of both parts, they need to be connected with a seam to obtain a single structure. The final stage of all construction should be complete drying. After this, you can do a test heating. It is also possible to use a design such as a fireplace.

Beautiful complex

To bake a brick cauldron with your own hands, you need to put in a little effort and time, and it is important to use drawings and photos, and not do it “by eye.” But as a result, you will get a unique structure with which you can easily prepare a wide variety of dishes for the whole family.
