In accordance with the purpose of the flange fasteners and the specific conditions of use, suitable steel grades are selected (carbon, stainless, cold-resistant, heat-resistant, etc.), the accuracy class of the fastener is determined, and the required strength class of the fasteners is calculated. Fasteners used to connect various steel structures, for example, in mechanical engineering, bridge construction, and in our case, for flange connections, must have a fastener accuracy class of at least class B. Such fasteners are installed in holes that are 1-2 mm larger than the diameter of the bolt .

They belong to general industrial fasteners of accuracy class B with a thread diameter from 6 to 48 mm and are intended for connecting flanged pipeline fittings to a pipeline or creating a detachable flange connection on a pipeline section.

For carbon steel bolts, the strength class is indicated by two numbers separated by a dot. For example: 4.6, 8.8, 10.9, etc.
The first digit indicates 1/100 of the nominal tensile strength value, measured in MPa. In the case of 8.8, the first 8 means: 8 x 100 = 800 MPa (8000 kgf/cm²).
The second number is the ratio of the yield strength to the tensile strength, multiplied by 10. In our example, the second 8 means: Yield strength / 8 x 10. Hence the yield strength = 8 x 8 x 10 = 640 MPa (6400 kgf/cm²).
The yield strength is the maximum working load of the bolt. When calculating a bolted connection for a given load, a coefficient of 0.5-0.6 from the yield strength is used, i.e., with a yield strength of 6.4 tons, the design load will be: 6.4x0.5 = 3.2 tons.
GOST 7798-70 bolts are produced in various designs: according to the diameter of the smooth part, the presence of through and cotter pin holes in the shaft and head of the bolt, holes on the end part of the bolt head.

Flange fasteners - nuts

Depending on the presence of chamfers, they are produced in three designs (with two chamfers, with one chamfer, without chamfers), and have metric thread according to GOST 24705-2004. The thread tolerance field indicates the accuracy of its execution. How more value tolerance range, the greater the deviation of the thread parameters from the nominal ones. For flange fasteners, including nuts GOST 5915-70, the tolerance range for internal thread- 6H. The thread pitch is the distance between the tops of the threads. The thread pitch can be large or small.

Flange fasteners - washers

To increase the area of the supporting surface, a bolt is placed between the bolt head (or nut) and the part being fixed (flange). Flat washers are manufactured in version 1 - accuracy classes A and C, in version 2 - accuracy class A. GOST 11371-78 washer in version 1 without a chamfer, version 2 has a chamfer along the outer diameter (bevel 30-45º from the vertical).
