Soul Reaver was the first of these, and the game was so successful that it was ported to literally all platforms. An excellent storyline, the enchanting atmosphere of Nosgoth and, of course, perfectly balanced, thoughtful gameplay. True, there are rumors that we only got part of what was actually included on the game disc. And access to other features and levels (!) is simply closed...

The first-born of the wave of sel-shading projects that has literally swept the gaming world recently. However, for that time it was almost a breakthrough. After the monotonous gray-brown textures of many PlayStation games, the world of Fear Effect looked at least stylish, even despite the conceptual resemblance to the famous Resident Evil. The second part went even further. The light touch of eroticism of the original turned into full revelation scenes, and the very frivolous personal relationships of the main characters were willingly sucked up by the press, constantly fueled by “hot” information from the developers themselves.

An absolutely magical remake of the 16-bit Lunar from the Sega CD. Improved colorful graphics, redesigned combat and magic systems, additional story quests, several new characters and more than 50 minutes of anime cutscenes were created specifically for the PlayStation version. Despite the occasional kinks in the combat engine, Lunar: SSSC will forever remain one of the most enjoyable 32-bit RPGs, with its strong cast of characters (whose personalities are written with amazing care), quality voice acting and vocal compositions, and, of course, a compelling story.

A three-dimensional platformer that managed to retain its own identity without becoming a blind copy of Sonic and Mario. The main character - the absolutely charming kitten Klonoa - knows how to juggle opponents, throwing them towards other enemies, or down to the ground, while pushing away from unlucky adversaries and reaching hard-to-reach places. The levels never get boring: the perspective is constantly changing, and you always need to look for new ways to overcome emerging obstacles. The graphic design is fun and psychedelic: cool bright colors, flowing waterfalls... either “Alice in Wonderland” or “Yellow Submarine”. Beauty!

Capcom did what seemed impossible at the time: it released a brilliant port of its arcade 2D fighting game on the RAM-starved PlayStation. Either the collapse of the Sega Saturn forced the company to devote all its efforts to polishing “Alpha” on the PS1, or by 1999 the programmers had gained enough experience in optimizing the code - the fact is clear: we got a fast, beautiful gameplay without slowdowns and loss of original animation frames. Considering the high quality of the original game, we are inclined to consider SFA3 not only the best 2D fighting game on the PlayStation 1, but also in the entire history of video games in general.

Another game that first appeared on the Sega Saturn and also failed to cross the shores of Japan in its original incarnation. Again, in this case, the situation was saved by the wild popularity of the PlayStation, and the English-speaking gaming community still saw the main competitor to FFVII. Grandia differs from its rival in a different visual solution (sprite characters on a three-dimensional background) and a combat mode that competently combines turn-based and real-time components, which radically changed (but did not complicate) the approach to one of the main parts of any RPG.

The original game was developed by the famous Studio 989 in response to Konami's MGS, although Gabe Logan is undoubtedly still a long way from Solid Snake. Nevertheless, the game almost immediately became a cult among... fans of Siphon Filter (a layer of fans was formed instantly). The second part is simply a herd of “bigger, better and longer”, fixing most of the bugs of the original. So in her person we got an almost ideal product of the action genre, which she remains to this day.

One of the latest and probably the best creations of the famous studio Psygnosis for PS1. The original game immediately received the status of the best space simulator of its time, and the following parts only continued what they started. The Colony Wars series has always been distinguished by a powerful orchestral soundtrack, incredible space landscapes, high-quality controls and a very good plot for, in general, a shooter, which became the basis for an entire universe. And while Red Sun lacks the non-linearity of the first game, it has enough positive aspects to outshine the first two games.

Not a single RPG before the eighth Fantasia could boast of such an impressive visual part, a truly cinematic quality of what was happening. This is a bold experiment by Square to introduce new ways of displaying what is happening into the game, the pursuit of realism and overall grandiosity. Compared to the phenomenal videos and impressive game graphics, the story and gameplay don't look that great. And although the hastily covered script holes and cumbersome character leveling system can get on your nerves, FFVIII still deserves to take a place in the list of the best games for PS one.

After the almost complete transition of Japanese RPGs into three dimensions, to see a completely two-dimensional project of this level in 2000 was at least a slight shock. Moreover, the early impression of the game was complete horror, but after the first hour it became clear that the creators of Star Ocean had created a real masterpiece, combining the best features of PRG with an original combat system and a classic platformer. The plot part is mixed with Scandinavian mythology, or rather a very peculiar Japanese view of it, where only the maiden of battles is more or less similar to the original. But this only gives the project additional charm. Recommended to all fans of the genre.

In fact, it is the first game that elevates stealth action almost to the level of a separate subgenre (MGS appeared six months later). Tenchu, of course, is far from a real ninja simulator, but the project did not require any special seriousness. But many players finally got the opportunity to be in the shoes of a real ninja with all that it entails: dizzying jumps on roofs, shurikens, poisoned rice for dogs and the famous smoke bombs (like Black Cloak). All sorts of spectacular special attacks that would be the envy of any fighting game have not been forgotten. And as a mandatory addition - the ability to choose a male or female character.

A logical development of its predecessor games to the level of the best console flight simulator of its time. Excellent graphics, a stylish futuristic interface, a branching sci-fi plot, the ability to play for four opposing sides, an impressive fleet of aircraft, memorable characters, beautiful anime videos between missions - all this was included in the Japanese two-disc version of ACZ. Alas, the Euro release has “thinned out” to just one disc and lost half of its attractive features. The attention to the smallest details and the love for their work of the developers from the English company Codemasters have turned a seemingly good rally race into a real cult item. It would seem: what could be interesting about driving alone along long tracks located in different parts of the planet, with just a few different cars? It turns out that this stupid activity can be made so addictive and extremely enjoyable that it seems as if you can play this game forever. Some people do just that, and you shouldn't blame them for it. Codemasters managed to make the gameplay of their race so enjoyable, and the graphics so detailed, that larger companies should be ashamed of all kinds of racing games that are not even worth mentioning next to Colin McRae Rally 2.

Resident Evil was anything but mysterious and evocative. Everything in it is familiar from the films and is quite standard: viruses, mutants, zombies and other evil spirits attack people, and we must cope with them alone. In turn, Square's project, created based on the book of the same name, differed from all the followers of "The Resident" precisely in that it forced players to think about what was happening. This was no longer a stupid action movie, but a real detective whose mysteries had to be solved no less stubbornly than puzzles in RE. Like most of the best games of all time, Parasite Eve is distinguished by the fact that it is able to create a certain mood in the player, immerse him in its world and not let go until the very end. And the fact that it was too short , these are little things that don’t change the overall picture.

And even though many of our readers in a football simulator value only the correspondence of player names to the real names of football players, today we evaluate games by completely different parameters. When the price of the PlayStation dropped to a level acceptable to everyone, the console began to fall into the hands of unintelligent children who, according to their parents, simply cannot live without toys about hedgehogs, gophers, penguins and crocodiles. Fortunately, it was at this point that Insomniac stopped making the “adult” games that had filled the PS1 and released an adventure game about a little dragon. So it would have been lost in a series of similar projects if it had not turned out to be so technically advanced and high quality that even teenage gamers turned their attention to it. It would not be much of an exaggeration to say that one of the most powerful 3D engines on the PS1 was used here, allowing the developers to make worlds both vast and beautiful. The gameplay didn't disappoint either. The most important thing here is that the hero is a cute little dragon. Together with the mime, the game was able to fly to the top of various charts and remain in our memory for a long time.

The creators of Ridge Racer Type 4 will forever go down in the history of video games as masters of modern design, which others will still have to study long and hard. Namco in this creation of itss has so far surpassed all other races in style and beauty that even today there is actually nothing to put next to the fourth Ridge Racer. And in this game, for the first time, Namco was able to decorate the race with some kind of plot, making you not just an anonymous racer, but the Main Character of the Game. This made the R4 itself truly alive and capable of giving us not only the joy of victory or the sorrow of defeat, but evoking a lot of other emotions. As a result, like no other race, R4 evokes a real sense of involvement in everything that happens on the screen. It's a pity that not everyone will like the gameplay in this project. If it had been a little more developed, Gran Turismo could have been retired.

Few people know that this famous fighting game originally appeared on slot machine from Sega, and was later ported to Saturn. However, due to the unpopularity of the console outside Japan, the game soon found a new platform, the Sony Playstation. After this transfer, Dead or Alive changed noticeably graphically and lost a little of the drive that was present in the original project. When the creators of fighting games began to actively delve into the abyss of self-copying, the small Japanese team Lightweight, in collaboration with Square, decided to look at fighting from the other side and gave birth to a rather controversial work, which cannot be called a fighting game in the usual sense. This is almost an outsider’s look at the life of samurai, devoid of the usual “toy” surroundings (health bars, square arenas, explosions from impacts and other anime tinsel), made by enthusiastic fans of history. A sequel, or rather a rebirth, of Chrono Trigger, the greatest RPG of the 16-bit period. Amazing player friendliness can be called a hallmark of CC. After the battle, wounded characters are healed automatically. Each of more than 40 heroes has a unique character, memorable appearance and manner of communication. Its creators managed to perfectly hit the mark with the theme of the game (Second World War) and go far enough from the usual canons of the genre so as not to turn your work into another Quake clone. MoH captivates with its diversity and perfectly recreated atmosphere of Nazi-occupied Europe in the 40s of the last century. It's just very interesting, which, frankly, cannot be said about dozens of similar games on PC and other consoles.

Without a doubt, Tomb Raider's merits can easily be debated today. Since its triumphant release, a huge number of similar creations have appeared on the market, which, frankly, are no worse, although not better, than any of the Tomb Raiders. However, for a number of reasons, it is worth highlighting this particular project out of the dozen like him. What is the main feature of the series that makes it so interesting and attractive? No, this is, of course, not Lara Croft. The main advantage of the Tomb Raider series is that in it the developers managed to convey the spirit of adventure. And not fantastic adventures , but quite real ones that could happen to any of us if we were lucky, and no one has managed to do this better than Eidos.

Futuristic racing with weapons has long gone out of fashion. Everyone understands this today, even the developers of the latest Wipeout series, who did not want to take their project seriously. Today, when everyone knows that investments in this business will not pay off, no one would develop a futuristic race so painstakingly and with great love, but would focus on cloning the next Gran Turtsmo. Well, that's not what we're talking about. Wipeout XL is everything you want from a race and much more. Graphically, it is still capable of surprising, and its musical accompaniment has already entered the history of video games. Its gameplay, honed to the smallest detail, is the envy of any Ridge Racer. In a word, a real masterpiece. Trust us.

FFT is by far one of the best games on the PlayStation - the only thing that prevents it from ranking first is the fact that it belongs to the turn-based strategy genre mixed with an RPG. And although this combination has long been popular, it’s difficult to call this genre a mass genre. But his fans won’t let him lie: Final Fantasy Tactics is a truly monumental work, worthy of all praise. Despite the fact that its gameplay does not have any revolutionary qualities, it is simply impossible to tear yourself away from it. As in most Square's projects, it is important how the game is presented to the player: if the usual FF amazes with its grandeur, then its tactical branch fascinates with its, so to speak, locality and attention to detail. As well as the kindness that permeates the entire work from start to finish.This is what is called true art.

Skateboarding is incredibly popular in America, and the fact that THPS didn't arrive until late in the PlayStation's life is a bit surprising. In any case, the expectation was justified, since this game was able to satisfy the needs of not only fans of this sport, but also managed to attract the attention of people far from it. And why all? Yes, because in itself it is simply amazing. The creators were not too lazy to pay attention to the smallest details and diversify the game to such an extent that you could play it endlessly. Thus, even if not a fan of skateboarding, any player could get tremendous pleasure from THPS just thanks to its gameplay. How about the almost complete freedom of creativity when performing various tricks, the ability to ride on absolutely any surface? These are, of course, little things, but they are what make a great video game great.

Crash Bandicoot 3 is a classic video game made according to all the canons of the platform arcade genre, where you will hardly find at least one flaw. A few skeptics consider it boring and monotonous, but most who have completed Vagrant Story are confident that they have experienced an amazing adventure in one of the most unusual, darkest and most stylish worlds from Square. It’s strange that after the stunning success of Symphony of the Night among critics, the whole world did not rush to rivet arcade consoles that were flat, but at the same time use the full potential of special effects (perhaps this was due to very low sales for such a project). The same Konami could have riveted several more Castlevanias without any problems, as is happening now on the Game Boy Advance. However, this did not happen, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night remains the best game in the series and one of the best games on the PlayStation.

It has everything a normal gamer needs. A stylish hero with the sonorous name Alucard (“Dracula” in reverse) and a classic Japanese game pedigree (half demon, half human), allowing him to use strengths both sides. His “role-playing” development also played a significant role with standard leveling, numerous equipment and a painful process of equipping (“this sword is more powerful, but this one is more beautiful and gives additional skills”). A truly ingenious solution with a “mirror” castle and the possibility of developing Alucard’s servants - Familiars. And the construction of the levels itself is beyond praise. Of course, you will have to suffer, the cherished figure of 208-odd percent of visiting all rooms will be a dream for many who completed Symphony of the Night to the end for a long time.

But most of all, Castlevania attracts with its visual beauty and musical accompaniment. The game is as beautiful as PlayStation can make it. The main feature is the widespread use of transparent special effects, which made it possible to make the trails from sword swings, fire, numerous waterfalls, and even the monsters themselves, Alucard’s opponents, so fabulously real.

Resident Evil 2 is one of the most important games in PlayStation history. Initially conceived as a simple continuation of the successful first part, this project was never released in its original form (it is rumored that Capcom still has the code for this game, which fans managed to nickname Resident Evil 1.5). And thank God! Thanks to Resident Evil 2 being delayed by a year, the result is a half-mile game that has become a true classic of the acton/adventure genre. Or survival horror, according to the creators of this project themselves.
