On the archipelago of the islands of Sostralia (Pigland), there is a war between six nations for possession of the “Island of Mud”. Over the course of 25 missions, the player will have to either fight off enemy soldiers from encirclement, or go on an assault with a number of wards. The player will be given a choice of various enemy soldiers in the form of pigs, stylized as French (blue), German (gray), British (green), Japanese (yellow), American (blue) and Russian (red) soldiers. The game is made entirely in 3D, the gameplay is reminiscent of games in the Worms series, for which Hogs of War was often called “worms in 3D, only with pigs.” However, the gameplay of Hogs of War is quite different from Worms due to the possibility of developing classes, the lack of destructible terrain, and the ability to use vehicles and buildings. In the game, each soldier can be upgraded to a certain rank through one of the development branches, which gives them their own unique weapons and abilities. The most fun and memorable game on the wonderful PS1.

This article provides a list of the best games for PlayStation 1 according to the Russian edition of the magazine Official PlayStation Magazine, published there in 2002 (in the last issue!). What to expect from this rating? At a minimum, it will help you find an interesting game that you missed. At the same time, this does not mean at all that a game that is not here is bad - ratings are a very subjective matter, and often the authors themselves warn that they chose games solely to their taste

Descriptions for the games are all taken from the same magazine. At the end of the description there is a link to the image of this game for ps1, in Russian or English. If there is no link to the Russian language, then most likely such a translation does not exist.
PS: Send all your gratitude to the editors of the now long-defunct magazine, I just formatted their material in electronic form

OPM Russia: best games for ps1, TOP 50!

50. Bust a Groove
Few could have imagined at one time that the frankly stupid, but so cute PaRappa the Rapper could appeal to Japanese children so much that after its release a real boom in dance games would begin. The boom happened, but of all the dance-musical works that were released, only Bust A Groove could claim to know a real video game. Despite the fact that in it, like in all other games of the genre, you only had to press the buttons at the right time, these dances were more like some kind of fighting game. 2 characters came onto the stage (each of whom had a health bar above their head) and began to dance to a catchy Japanese dance tune. The better one dances, the worse it becomes for the other. Well, when someone manages to press the super move button in time, the enemy is no longer interested in choreography. All this was done at the highest technical level for those times. And the game itself left only pleasant impressions.
[Download: * , ] 49. Hot Shots Golf
Typically, virtual golf is the least popular of all types of sports simulators. Firstly, the sport itself is not very popular here, and secondly, these games are implemented, as a rule, so boring and confusing that they get boring after the first half hour. Another thing is that the Hot Shots Golf series is simple, player-friendly, entertaining, with a bunch of modes, and also beautiful. Even if you have never seen golf before, this game will give you a good opportunity to learn its basics with pleasure, and just spend a lot of pleasant hours.
[Download: ] 48. Pandemonium! 2
When the PlayStation first hit the market, many simply did not know what to do with it. On the one hand, with its help it was possible to create (for the first time!) full-fledged three-dimensional games, but on the other hand, at that time few people knew how to make them. Crystal Dynamics, now owned by publisher Eidos, already had some experience making 3D games thanks to its work with the 3DO game console, and so it's no surprise that they were one of the first to make a 3D title that was both beautiful and playable for the PS1. Even if they didn't have the guts to immediately convert it to full 3D (all the action took place on a plane, but in a three-dimensional world), Pandemonium 2 still remains in memory as one of the most interesting games of the early years of the PlayStation. Well, the fact that it was just a three-dimensional flat arcade is not particularly important.
[Download: , ] 47. Spider Man
Legends can be made about the incredible popularity of this hero in red and blue tights. He left a very significant mark on the gaming world (about 30 projects on all platforms), but PlayStation somehow had no luck with him. Judge for yourself, Spider-Man only got his own game in 2000, but what a game! Of course, the plot of Spider-Man is very simple, but that doesn't matter. After all, the main thing in such action projects is ease of control, beautiful pictures and a low level of complexity. And although the famous flights on the web between skyscrapers are implemented strangely, they give a complete sense of the reality of what is happening.
[Download: , ] 46. Panzer Front
When first encountering this EnterBrain creation, no one expected anything outstanding from it. But in reality, Panzer Front turned out to be a very high-quality tank simulator with small tactical elements. Excellent graphics by PS1 standards, convenient and at the same time realistic controls, and most importantly, a well-developed physical model and considerable depth of gameplay. A pleasant surprise was the Cyrillic alphabet in the “Soviet” missions and the inscription “For the Motherland” on the sides of cars easily recognizable from numerous films.
[Download: , ] 45. Apocalypse
A great game for many reasons. The prototype of the main character was officially Bruce Willis, he even voiced him himself. A completely unique case for the relationship between the video game industry and Hollywood (especially since Apocalypse is a completely independent project). But the main distinguishing feature of the game was the fact that it was still interesting to play; moreover, it simply captured you with its drive!
[Download: , ] 44. Vigilante 8
After Twisted Metal, this is the first successful attempt in our memory to combine cars and various firearms. To be more precise, Vigilante 8 even surpasses its indirect ancestor in terms of gameplay and graphics quality. And the multiplayer mode, for which TM has always been praised, is much more interesting here. Another big advantage of the game is its unique style: large American cars, bell-bottoms, huge glasses, bright clothes - in short, freestyle 70s, disco and... the famous “Hangar 18”.
[Download: , ] 43. Ghost in the Shell
It just so happens that GitS is known in our country primarily thanks to the full-length cyberpunk anime opus from Mamoru Oshii - a complex and pretentious film. Much fewer people know about the semi-humorous manga by Masamune Shiro, which started it all. The toy is based on the manga universe of Ghost in the Shell, with all the comedic antics of talking fuchikoma tanks. Rushing through urban stages in such a tank to the music of progressive European DJs, admiring the incomparable screensavers in between, you understand: the game does not have to turn all the stereotypes on its head in order to please us.
[Download: , ] 42. Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare
The latest true survival horror on PS1, taking advantage of the interesting dynamic lighting effect of pre-rendered backgrounds. Two characters (each with its own story and variation of gameplay), an endless search for keys, unlocking doors, a sinking heart at every rustle and rattle, a mandatory economical attitude towards cartridges, textbook riddles with antiques, circling around the island in search of opened passages - as you can see, not Not a single genre cliche has been forgotten. So what if AitD is played with a bang? The old dish is served to us with a new sauce, and there is no reason not to enjoy its spicy taste!
[Download: , ] 41. Twisted Metal 2
Neither give nor take - a fighting game on cars. A dozen arenas, a damn dozen drivers with their infernal vehicles, hung from the hood to the trunk with deadly weapons, and a Multiplayer mode - that’s all you need for a good time! Where else can you take a sharp turn on the Yenisei fields and shoot the Eiffel Tower almost point-blank with rockets from an ice cream truck? As in any other fighting game, the ball is ruled by a well-balanced balance of characteristics of various characters. And plus black, black humor, of which only a pale semblance remained in subsequent parts.
[Download: , ] 40. Driver
Criminal races across American cities did not start with Grand Theft Auto on PS2! The authors of the unforgettable Destruction Derby raised the concept of reckless destruction on wheels to new heights when they released Driver - a simulator of a detective who infiltrated a large mafia group as a driver. “Undercover” work consists of racing against patrol cars, delivering contraband goods to designated places, “standing on guard” during bank robberies... The very format of the game, when fervent antisocial actions are included in a set of missions, has become the key to its popularity.
[Download: , ] 39. Quake II
The crowning achievement of the PlayStation FPS genre in every way. The appearance of this game in this quality can only be compared with the release of Dune 2 for the Sega Mega Drive. Of course, the low resolution and periodically dropping frame rate may turn off people who saw the original on PC. But for PlayStation owners there is no other alternative, and the ability to simultaneously use a Dual Shock and a mouse generally puts Quake 2 beyond competition.
[Download: , ] 38. Silent Hill
The most successful attempt to reimagine a specific subgenre of horror games that has remained unchanged since the release of the first Resident Evil. In Konami's work, the emphasis is not on the typical story of shooting spawning zombies, but on a psychologically verified plot in the style of Stephen King. Panic horror here is caused not by some creature that suddenly stuns with its appearance, but by things, on the contrary, reliably hidden from the eyes of the player. The masterpiece graphic design and unusual soundtrack deserve special mention. Silent Hill is, without exaggeration, one of the most frightening games on the console. For which we respect.
[Download: , ] 37. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
It’s unlikely that anyone expected to see a continuation of the ancient bloody RPG/action Blood Omen from Crystal Dynamic. And even more so, no one expected that it would become the progenitor of an entire line of Legacy of Kain Series projects. Soul Reaver was the first of these, and the game was so successful that it was ported to literally all platforms. An excellent storyline, the enchanting atmosphere of Nosgoth and, of course, perfectly balanced, thoughtful gameplay. True, there are rumors that we only got part of what was actually included on the game disc. And access to other features and levels (!) is simply closed...
[Download: , ] 36. Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix
The first-born of the wave of sel-shading projects that has literally swept the gaming world recently. However, for that time it was almost a breakthrough. After the monotonous gray-brown textures of many PlayStation games, the world of Fear Effect looked at least stylish, even despite the conceptual resemblance to the famous Resident Evil. The second part went even further. The light touch of eroticism of the original turned into full revelation scenes, and the very frivolous personal relationships of the main characters were willingly sucked up by the press, constantly fueled by “hot” information from the developers themselves.
[Download: , ] 35. Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
An absolutely magical remake of the 16-bit Lunar from the Sega CD. Improved colorful graphics, redesigned combat and magic systems, additional story quests, several new characters and more than 50 minutes of anime cutscenes were created specifically for the PlayStation version. Despite the occasional kinks in the combat engine, Lunar: SSSC will forever remain one of the most enjoyable 32-bit RPGs, with its strong cast of characters (whose personalities are written with amazing care), quality voice acting and vocal compositions, and, of course, a compelling story.
[Download: ] 34. Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
A three-dimensional platformer that managed to retain its own identity without becoming a blind copy of Sonic and Mario. The main character - the absolutely charming kitten Klonoa - knows how to juggle opponents, throwing them towards other enemies, or down to the ground, while pushing away from unlucky adversaries and reaching hard-to-reach places. The levels never get boring: the perspective is constantly changing, and you always need to look for new ways to overcome emerging obstacles. The graphic design is fun and psychedelic: cool bright colors, flowing waterfalls... either “Alice in Wonderland” or “Yellow Submarine”. Beauty!
[Download: ] 33. Street Fighter Alpha 3
Capcom did what seemed impossible at the time: it released a brilliant port of its arcade 2D fighting game on the RAM-starved PlayStation. Either the collapse of the Sega Saturn forced the company to devote all its efforts to polishing “Alpha” on the PS1, or by 1999 the programmers had gained enough experience in optimizing the code - the fact is clear: we got a fast, beautiful gameplay without slowdowns and loss of original animation frames. Considering the high quality of the original game, we are inclined to consider SFA3 not only the best 2D fighting game on the PlayStation 1, but also in the entire history of video games in general.
[Download: , ] 32. Grandia
Another game that first appeared on the Sega Saturn and also failed to cross the shores of Japan in its original incarnation. Again, in this case, the situation was saved by the wild popularity of the PlayStation, and the English-speaking gaming community still saw the main competitor to FFVII. Grandia differs from its rival in a different visual solution (sprite characters on a three-dimensional background) and a combat mode that competently combines turn-based and real-time components, which radically changed (but did not complicate) the approach to one of the main parts of any RPG.
[Download: ] 31. Siphon Filter 2
The original game was developed by the famous Studio 989 in response to Konami's MGS, although Gabe Logan is undoubtedly still a long way from Solid Snake. Nevertheless, the game almost immediately became a cult among... fans of Siphon Filter (a layer of fans was formed instantly). The second part is simply a herd of “bigger, better and longer”, fixing most of the bugs of the original. So in her person we got an almost ideal product of the action genre, which she remains to this day.
[Download: , ] 30. Colony Wars: Red Sun
One of the latest and probably the best creations of the famous studio Psygnosis for PS1. The original game immediately received the status of the best space simulator of its time, and the following parts only continued what they started. The Colony Wars series has always been distinguished by a powerful orchestral soundtrack, incredible space landscapes, high-quality controls and a very good plot for, in general, a shooter, which became the basis for an entire universe. And while Red Sun lacks the non-linearity of the first game, it has enough positive aspects to outshine the first two games.
[Download: , ] 29.Final Fantasy VIII
Not a single RPG before the eighth Fantasia could boast of such an impressive visual part, a truly cinematic quality of what was happening. This is a bold experiment by Square to introduce new ways of displaying what is happening into the game, the pursuit of realism and overall grandiosity. Compared to the phenomenal videos and impressive game graphics, the story and gameplay don't look that great. And although the hastily covered script holes and cumbersome character leveling system can get on your nerves, FFVIII still deserves to take a place in the list of the best games for PS one.
[Download: , ] 28. Valkyrie Profile
After the almost complete transition of Japanese RPGs into three dimensions, to see a completely two-dimensional project of this level in 2000 was at least a slight shock. Moreover, the early impression of the game was complete horror, but after the first hour it became clear that the creators of Star Ocean had created a real masterpiece, combining the best features of PRG with an original combat system and a classic platformer. The plot part is mixed with Scandinavian mythology, or rather a very peculiar Japanese view of it, where only the maiden of battles is more or less similar to the original. But this only gives the project additional charm. Recommended to all fans of the genre.
[Download: ] 27. Tenchu: Stealth Assassins
In fact, it is the first game that elevates stealth action almost to the level of a separate subgenre (MGS appeared six months later). Tenchu, of course, is far from a real ninja simulator, but the project did not require any special seriousness. But many players finally got the opportunity to be in the shoes of a real ninja with all that it entails: dizzying jumps on roofs, shurikens, poisoned rice for dogs and the famous smoke bombs (like Black Cloak). All sorts of spectacular special attacks that would be the envy of any fighting game have not been forgotten. And as a mandatory addition - the ability to choose a male or female character.
[Download: * , ] 26. Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere
A logical development of its predecessor games to the level of the best console flight simulator of its time. Excellent graphics, a stylish futuristic interface, a branching sci-fi plot, the ability to play for four opposing sides, an impressive fleet of aircraft, memorable characters, beautiful anime videos between missions - all this was included in the Japanese two-disc version of ACZ. Alas, the Euro release has “thinned out” to just one disc and lost half of its attractive features. Therefore, we recommend playing the Japanese version: even despite the problems with the language, you will get much more pleasure from it.
[Download: , ] 25. Colin McRae Rally 2.0
The attention to the smallest details and the love for their work of the developers from the English company Codemasters have turned a seemingly good rally race into a real cult item. It would seem: what could be interesting about driving alone along long tracks located in different parts of the planet, with just a few different cars? It turns out that this stupid activity can be made so addictive and extremely enjoyable that it seems as if you can play this game forever. Some people do just that, and you shouldn't blame them for it. Codemasters managed to make the gameplay of their race so enjoyable, and the graphics so detailed, that larger companies should be ashamed of all kinds of racing games that are not even worth mentioning next to Colin McRae Rally 2.
[Download: , ] 24. Parasite Eve
Resident Evil was anything but mysterious and evocative. Everything in it is familiar from the films and is quite standard: viruses, mutants, zombies and other evil spirits attack people, and we must cope with them alone. In turn, Square's project, created based on the book of the same name, differed from all the followers of "The Resident" precisely in that it forced players to think about what was happening. This was no longer a stupid action movie, but a real detective whose mysteries had to be solved no less stubbornly than puzzles in RE. Like most of the best games of all time, Parasite Eve is distinguished by the fact that it is able to create a certain mood in the player, immerse him in its world and not let go until the very end. And the fact that it was too short , these are little things that don’t change the overall picture.
[Download: , ] 23. Pro Evolution Soccer
If we lived in America, if Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer were on this list, you'd most likely see one of several American football simulators. Seriously, the only one sport game, which broke into the ratings, in our opinion, is the best simulator of any sport ever released on PlayStation. It combines both accessible and deep gameplay with equally stunning graphics and animation. And even though many of our readers in a football simulator value only the correspondence of player names to the real names of football players, today we evaluate games by completely different parameters. So excuse us, dear FIFA fans, but your favorite football is not included in the list of the best games for PlayStation. Maybe next time?
[Download: , ] 22. Spyro the Dragon
When the price of the PlayStation dropped to a level acceptable to everyone, the console began to fall into the hands of unintelligent children who, according to their parents, simply cannot live without toys about hedgehogs, gophers, penguins and crocodiles. Fortunately, it was at this point that Insomniac stopped making the “adult” games that had filled the PS1 and released an adventure game about a little dragon. So it would have been lost in a series of similar projects if it had not turned out to be so technically advanced and high quality that even teenage gamers turned their attention to it. It would not be much of an exaggeration to say that one of the most powerful 3D engines on the PS1 was used here, allowing the developers to make worlds both vast and beautiful. The gameplay didn't disappoint either. The most important thing here is that the hero is a cute little dragon. Together with the mime, the game was able to fly to the top of various charts and remain in our memory for a long time.
[Download: , ] 21. Ridge Racer Type 4
The creators of Ridge Racer Type 4 will forever go down in the history of video games as masters of modern design, which others will still have to study long and hard. Namco in this creation of itss has so far surpassed all other races in style and beauty that even today there is actually nothing to put next to the fourth Ridge Racer. And in this game, for the first time, Namco was able to decorate the race with some kind of plot, making you not just an anonymous racer, but the Main Character of the Game. This made the R4 itself truly alive and capable of giving us not only the joy of victory or the sorrow of defeat, but evoking a lot of other emotions. As a result, like no other race, R4 evokes a real sense of involvement in everything that happens on the screen. It's a pity that not everyone will like the gameplay in this project. If it had been a little more developed, Gran Turismo could have been retired.
[Download: , ] 20. Dead or Alive
Few people know that this famous fighting game originally appeared on slot machine from Sega, and was later ported to Saturn. However, due to the unpopularity of the console outside Japan, the game soon found a new platform, the Sony Playstation. After this transfer, Dead or Alive changed noticeably graphically and lost a little of the drive that was present in the original project. But the main feature of the game has been preserved - multi-purpose girls with overly enlarged, well-animated forms. It is worth mentioning the mass of costumes provided for each of the characters.
[Download: , ] 19. Soul Blade
One of the few three-dimensional fighting games where the characters teach each other smarts not with their bare hands, but with the help of all kinds of bladed weapons. Soul Blade (Soul Edge in Japan) for PS1 is about the same thing that Soul Calibur later became for the Dreamcast. A beautiful, appetizing and juicy fight, which is nice to turn on for half an hour - to chop up your bosom buddy in Versus mode. It was here that the legendary Greek Sophitia first appeared - everyone’s favorite, smart, beautiful, champion, honored inhabitant of the gaming Olympus. Pay attention to the arranged soundtrack of Khan Super Session; Namco has always known a lot about good music.
[Download: , ] 18. Bushido Blade 2
When the creators of fighting games began to actively delve into the abyss of self-copying, the small Japanese team Lightweight, in collaboration with Square, decided to look at fighting from the other side and gave birth to a rather controversial work, which cannot be called a fighting game in the usual sense. This is almost an outsider’s look at the life of samurai, devoid of the usual “toy” surroundings (health bars, square arenas, explosions from impacts and other anime tinsel), made by enthusiastic fans of history. Only in this fight can you kill a person with one blow of the sword. Bushido Blade 2 gave too much freedom and offered too many unexpected solutions. As a result, it strayed too far from the classic video game conventions to be truly revolutionary.
[Download: , ] 17. Chrono Cross
A sequel, or rather a rebirth, of Chrono Trigger, the greatest RPG of the 16-bit period. Amazing player friendliness can be called a hallmark of CC. No “random encounters” with enemies: they are visible on the map, and the fight can be avoided. Any battle (even with a boss) can be interrupted at any time. After the battle, wounded characters are healed automatically. Each of more than 40 heroes has a unique character, memorable appearance and manner of communication. The music is composed by the brilliant Yasunori Mitsuda. Graphics are at the limit of the console's capabilities. Modern classic.
[Download: , ] 16. Einhander
Whatever genre the great Square takes on, it at least produces a good game. And the classic shooter Einhänder generally exceeded all our expectations. Today it is undoubtedly the best representative in its class for the PS1 console, far ahead of the former leader Philosoma. Einhander successfully combines beautiful 3D graphics, a classic game concept and a rather unconventional approach to the use of bonus weapons. And the presence of three modifications of the ship provides an additional incentive for repeated playthroughs.
[Download: ] 15. Dino Crisis 2
Hand on heart, this already looks much less like a Resident Evil clone. If the first part still had something in common with “Resident Evil”, the second DC is similar to it in the same way as a zombie is to a dinosaur. We were expecting a standard sequel, more of the same, timid hiders in dark corridors, and Capcom unexpectedly rolled out a hurricane of action. The dinosaurs are trying to take out numbers, but there is enough ammunition for everyone. The controls have been edited: a valuable opportunity to shoot on the move has appeared, transforming the gameplay and adding a fresh stream of dynamism to it. Lots of shooting and some clever riddles. A bucket of adrenaline. Respect.
[Download: , ] 14. Xenogears
Constantly changing places of good and evil, intrigue, betrayal, genocide, moral conflicts, mental instability, issues of religion, ethics and relationships between people - before Xenogears, not a single video game released in English addressed such “adult” topics, and would do this is at the proper, serious level. If you haven't played Xenogears, you have no idea how deep the plot of this sci-fi tale is. And what an amazing soundtrack here from maestro Yasunori Mitsuda, what anime screensavers... A masterpiece of masterpieces, without any discounts.
[Download: , ] 13. Medal of Honor
It's amazing but true: before the release of this first-person shooter, which happened at the end of the PlayStation era, not a single original game of this genre was released on the world's most popular gaming platform that one could be proud of. Medal of Honor not only managed to fill the void, but also went well beyond its status as "the only good first-person shooter on PS1." Its creators managed to perfectly hit the mark with the theme of the game (Second World War) and go far enough from the usual canons of the genre so as not to turn your work into another Quake clone. MoH captivates with its diversity and perfectly recreated atmosphere of Nazi-occupied Europe in the 40s of the last century. It's just very interesting, which, frankly, cannot be said about dozens of similar games on PC and other consoles.
[Download: , ] 12. Tomb Raider
Without a doubt, Tomb Raider's merits can easily be debated today. Since its triumphant release, a huge number of similar creations have appeared on the market, which, frankly, are no worse, although not better, than any of the Tomb Raiders. However, for a number of reasons, it is worth highlighting this particular project out of the dozen like him. What is the main feature of the series that makes it so interesting and attractive? No, this is, of course, not Lara Croft. The main advantage of the Tomb Raider series is that in it the developers managed to convey the spirit of adventure. And not fantastic adventures , but quite real ones that could happen to any of us if we were lucky, and no one has managed to do this better than Eidos.
[Download: , ] 11. Wipeout XL (Wipeout 2097)
Futuristic racing with weapons has long gone out of fashion. Everyone understands this today, even the developers of the latest Wipeout series, who did not want to take their project seriously. But at the beginning of the PlayStation’s life, no one knew about this, and Psygnosis, which did not have much experience behind it, prepared a real gift for everyone in the form of such a race. Today, when everyone knows that investments in this business will not pay off, no one would develop a futuristic race so painstakingly and with great love, but would focus on cloning the next Gran Turtsmo. Well, that's not what we're talking about. Wipeout XL is everything you want from a race and much more. Graphically, it is still capable of surprising, and its musical accompaniment has already entered the history of video games. Its gameplay, honed to the smallest detail, is the envy of any Ridge Racer. In a word, a real masterpiece. Trust us.
[Download: ] 10.Final Fantasy Tactics
FFT is by far one of the best games on the PlayStation - the only thing that prevents it from ranking first is the fact that it belongs to the turn-based strategy genre mixed with an RPG. And although this combination has long been popular, it’s difficult to call this genre a mass genre. But his fans won’t let him lie: Final Fantasy Tactics is a truly monumental work, worthy of all praise. Despite the fact that its gameplay does not have any revolutionary qualities, it is simply impossible to tear yourself away from it. As in most Square's projects, it is important how the game is presented to the player: if the usual FF amazes with its grandeur, then its tactical branch fascinates with its, so to speak, locality and attention to detail. As well as the kindness that permeates the entire work from start to finish. This is what is called true art.
[Download: , ] 9. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
Skateboarding is incredibly popular in America, and the fact that THPS didn't arrive until late in the PlayStation's life is a bit surprising. In any case, the expectation was justified, since this game was able to satisfy the needs of not only fans of this sport, but also managed to attract the attention of people far from it. And why all? Yes, because in itself it is simply amazing. The creators were not too lazy to pay attention to the smallest details and diversify the game to such an extent that you could play it endlessly. Thus, even if not a fan of skateboarding, any player could get tremendous pleasure from THPS just thanks to its gameplay. How about the almost complete freedom of creativity when performing various tricks, the ability to ride on absolutely any surface? These are, of course, little things, but they are what make a great video game great.
[Download: , ] 8. Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped
Crash Bandicoot 3 is a classic video game made according to all the canons of the platform arcade genre, where you will hardly find at least one flaw. Its creators did not set themselves the task of turning the world upside down or creating a work of art. Instead, they took a proven genre from ancient times, adapted it to the PlayStation and brought it to perfection. As a result, we received an almost ideal product, which, although there are not enough stars in the sky, amazes with its technical perfection. Robots will one day become so perfect that they will be completely like humans and will not make any mistakes. Well, the fact that they don’t have a soul doesn’t matter. The main thing is that they do their job well, and for our souls we will only have ordinary people.
[Download: , ] 7. Vagrant Story
A few skeptics consider it boring and monotonous, but most who have completed Vagrant Story are confident that they have experienced an amazing adventure in one of the most unusual, darkest and most stylish worlds from Square. Medieval aesthetics are perfectly combined here with the cinematic nature of the production, and the unique, deep combat process is combined with the research excitement traditional for a good RPG. Weapons, inventory and a list of spells are conveniently customizable to suit your needs: the number of adjustable parameters significantly exceeds the standard set of characteristics of characters in other RPGs.
[Download: , ] 6. Tekken 3
While fighting games have gone from being universally loved to being the passion of a relatively small group of fans in recent years, the third Tekken is still capable of impressing any gamer. It is well-developed enough to not get boring quickly, and in it you can find a bunch of heroes for every taste, so that you have someone to associate yourself with. Most importantly, this fight can bring pleasure to almost everyone, thanks to its accessibility and entertainment. It is also still one of the most stylish video games of all time, the design of which still has a huge influence on the vast majority of developers. This is why we love Tekken 3. This is why we can safely hate it.
[Download: , ] 5. Gran Turismo 2
Gran Turismo 2 shows us the same qualitative leap forward compared to the first GT, which was the release of GT, which instantly made all other racing games look like a poor semblance of a “real driving simulator”. 500 licensed cars, dozens of game modes, including gran turismo competitions, test runs, rallies, king of the hill championships, and even small Dahatsu Midget races. The close-to-real “physics” of the cars’ behavior on the track is captivating, as well as a thousand little things like the authentic sound of each engine. The ultimate toy for car enthusiasts!
[Download: , ] 4. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
It’s strange that after the stunning success of Symphony of the Night among critics, the whole world did not rush to rivet arcade consoles that were flat, but at the same time use the full potential of special effects (perhaps this was due to very low sales for such a project). The same Konami could have riveted several more Castlevanias without any problems, as is happening now on the Game Boy Advance. However, this did not happen, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night remains the best game in the series and one of the best games on the PlayStation.

It has everything a normal gamer needs. A stylish hero with the sonorous name Alucard (“Dracula” in reverse) and a classic Japanese game pedigree (half demon, half human), allowing him to use strengths both sides. His “role-playing” development also played a significant role with standard leveling, numerous equipment and a painful process of equipping (“this sword is more powerful, but this one is more beautiful and gives additional skills”). A truly ingenious solution with a “mirror” castle and the possibility of developing Alucard’s servants - Familiars. And the construction of the levels itself is beyond praise. Of course, you will have to suffer, the cherished figure of 208-odd percent of visiting all rooms will be a dream for many who completed Symphony of the Night to the end for a long time.

But most of all, Castlevania attracts with its visual beauty and musical accompaniment. The game is as beautiful as PlayStation can make it. The main feature is the widespread use of transparent special effects, which made it possible to make the trails from sword swings, fire, numerous waterfalls, and even the monsters themselves, Alucard’s opponents, so fabulously real.
[Download: , ] 3.Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 2 is one of the most important games in PlayStation history. Initially conceived as a simple continuation of the successful first part, this project was never released in its original form (it is rumored that Capcom still has the code for this game, which fans managed to nickname Resident Evil 1.5). And thank God! Thanks to Resident Evil 2 being delayed by a year, the result is a half-mile game that has become a true classic of the acton/adventure genre. Or survival horror, according to the creators of this project themselves.

What is the reason for the success of “Resident” and our love for it? Probably the fact that with its help we could completely immerse ourselves in the world of a classic horror film. Only in “The Resident” could we feel ourselves in such danger, which we almost never find ourselves in in real life. It was in this game that we could test our courage and endurance without fear of consequences (it's just a game, after all). And it was in this game that we could experience all those unreal horrors that are sometimes shown to us on TV in films about the risen dead.

And Resident Evil 2 is a truly honest game, made not under the dictation of the head of the marketing department, but with all my heart. Despite all the nightmares that happen in her, both scary and funny (depending on how you look at them), she carries a huge positive charge. Yes, and such that after completing it you experience such strong inspiration that you want to go through it again from beginning to end, regardless of any difficulties. And you see, only the best games in the world can evoke such a feeling.
[Download: , ] 2.Final Fantasy VII
Whatever we say about Tekken, Wipeout, Lara Croft, Crash Bandicoot, it was the (disinterested) transition to the PlayStation banner of the cult Japanese publishing house Square that, in the eyes of Japanese, and then all other buyers, put an end to the dispute between gaming platforms. Having been under the wing of Nintendo for a long time, this publishing house was able to earn itself an incredibly impeccable reputation without releasing truly impeccable games. But he had and still has a magically attractive series of role-playing games, Final Fantasy, which, like George Lucas' Star Wars, was able to accurately capture the moods and desires of modern players yearning for beautiful fairy tales.

In fact, how Sony was able to buy Square from Nintendo still remains a closely guarded mystery. However, starting in 1996, when the publisher of Final Fantasy first announced plans to release the next installment in its famous series exclusively for PS1, Square began to persistently use its influence on the fragile minds of players solely for the benefit of Sony Corporation. For starters, she released a demo of FF VII a few weeks after the Japanese launch of the Nintendo 64, then she announced FF VIII a week before the Sega Dreamcast announcement to ruin Sega's entire short-lived holiday. Well, in conclusion, just before the launch of the PlayStation 2 platform, she showed her fans three new “fantasies” at once, one of which (namely Final Fantasy IX) was lucky enough to promote in July a smaller version of the PlayStation, called by its manufacturer PS One. With all this, the creators of Final Fantasy still manage not only to engage in politics, but also to develop more and more ambitious, and even quite interesting works. And this, you know, in our difficult times, can be equated almost to a real feat.
[Download: , ] 1. Metal Gear Solid
By the fall of 1998, Playstation already had everything it could wish for, except for one thing - a real masterpiece, not made by the marketing department, the place of which was finally and irrevocably taken by the mind-blowing Metal Gear Solid from Konami. Having been in development for an indecently long time, this game managed to become a real legend even before its release, the status of which was successfully confirmed by the final version of the game itself. In it, probably for the first and last time, we were able to see with our own eyes what the PlayStation is really capable of. But most importantly, it was this work that the true connoisseurs of video games, who at that time looked at the PS1 exclusively as a super-pop console that had already outlived its time, were finally able to truly envy.

Unfortunately, the Japanese themselves, who managed to give birth to a masterpiece of such incredible power and insight, treated it rather coolly. But the American players, to everyone’s surprise, managed to really appreciate it (at least, that’s what I really want to believe). Moreover, they loved it so much, and this is especially true for the game journalists there, that just the video of its sequel for the PlayStation 2 could cause real fits of wild fanaticism in them. However, we easily forgive them for this fanaticism, since in our opinion, and not only in our opinion, no one has been able to create anything better than Metal Gear Solid for the most popular gaming system of our time. Thus, the great creation of designer Hideo Kojma was able to special problems go down in PlayStation history as not only one of its most popular games, but also as the true crowning achievement of its development.
[Download: , ] This is how the list turned out. As a bonus, links to a similar rating from an American portal ign.com for 2002 and Japanese magazine Famitsu 2000 And also interesting statistics on copies of Playstation 1 games sold. Maybe someone will be interested.

Twenty years ago the world first saw PlayStation One. Sony's first console not only became the flagship of the fifth generation of consoles, but also raised a huge army of players, instilling in them a taste and love for good games.

Now in PlayStation Store On the occasion of the holiday, a grand sale of classic projects is taking place. Once again, congratulations to Sony and its loyal fans, indulge in nostalgia and remember what we all played with gusto on PS One. To make the nostalgia even deeper, we've included a few more vintage commercials. Be careful, two of them are in Japanese!

Tomb Raider

We all know the eternally young tomb raider Lara Croft. It seems that the charming British woman, briskly jumping between the tombs and firing pistols with both hands, has always been with us. The first part of the series, meanwhile, came out eighteen years ago.

Tomb Raider not only gave modern culture one of the most famous gaming heroines, but also made a huge contribution to the development of adventure games: mandatory manipulation of levers, jumping on platforms over pits with spikes, dodging menacingly swinging blades - all this came from here. Last year the series survived. A great opportunity to find out where it all started!

Wipeout

Racing has always been good on PlayStation consoles. Fans of licensed cars and hardcore enjoyed Gran Turismo, and for connoisseurs of everything futuristic, another famous series was created - Wipeout. Here, unlike the creation of Polyphony Digital, the emphasis was not on thoughtful driving on real tracks. Flying at supersonic speeds, crazy controlled drifts, using weapons and a fiery electronic soundtrack - this is what many of us spent endless evenings doing, competing with friends and setting new and new records on the tracks.

The last part was released almost three years ago, and, unfortunately, there is no new one in sight (Sony has closed the division responsible for continuing the series). All hope for the classics!

Crash Bandicoot

Another great game series whose golden age was in the nineties. The first project of the famous Naughty Dog for PS One - Crash Bandicoot- has become, if not the standard for all adventure games, then a very good guideline. The game had two direct sequels, as well as a couple of projects in other genres, like the wonderful Crash Team Racing and not bad Crash Bash.

Then the series was farmed out to Traveller’s Tales and Radical Entertainment, where it withered away. Naughty Dog, in turn, used a bunch of unrealized ideas when creating the series Jak and Daxter. But the classics have not gone away! Today, the adventures of the ever-grinning Crash and the funny Aku-Aku mask will look great on the PS Vita screen.

Final Fantasy VII

According to observations, most fans of Japanese RPGs began their journey precisely with the seventh Final Fantasy. Try to find at least one player who hasn't heard about the story about the guy with the funny hair and simply huge with a sword. Final Fantasy VII not only opened a window for JRPGs in America and Europe, but also showed that Japanese games, as they say, “are capable of both drama and a powerful plot.”

Battles with Shin-Ra, adventures in the Golden Saucer and breeding chocobos - all this will remain with us for many years to come. Final Fantasy VII is not an ordinary game, even by the standards of the series. Square Enix rarely continues or develops a story after finishing a project. Here we also got a prequel Crisis Core, and a sequel film Advent Children, and endless mentions of heroes in other games and series. Fans have been asking for years to continue the story of Cloud Strife, but the developers are relentless - here they said everything they needed to say. And rightly so. There will be new stories and new heroes, and Final Fantasy VII it should remain exactly as it is.

Metal Gear Solid

Another one legendary game Our selection includes a spy thriller from the master Hideo Kojima. Series Metal Gear in terms of complexity and abundance of a variety of themes and characters, it will give odds to any series, film or book. Here you will find a story about brotherhood, friendship and love, and reflections on the duty and purpose of a soldier, and even the problem of free will in artificial intelligence. But most of this happened later.

Then, in 1998, everything was just beginning (very old Metal Gear We won’t remember now anyway). As we approached the top-secret Shadow Moses base, we had no idea what would happen to us in the next few hours.

We must give Kojima his due - few developers can So approach to creating games. Just remember the fight with Psycho Mantis. Snake is told over the radio that the enemy is reading his thoughts, and this turns out to be true. The telepath simply dodges all your shots. Exit? Switch the controller to another socket! Even today, this makes your jaw drop to the floor, and sixteen years ago, even more so. Either way, the classics never get old, and the first MGS plays just as well today as it did on the day it was released.

Driver

Driver is one of those games that we didn’t begin to appreciate right away. At first, the inability to get out of the car, wander around the city, and just hit the first poor guy I came across was somewhat frustrating. However, this passed quite quickly, once you got into the aesthetics of the game.

After several hours of driving around virtual Miami, San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles, it was simply impossible to imagine yourself not driving a car, and games that did not allow you to sit behind your favorite steering wheel were perceived as nothing more than an insult. Everything, however, will change in a couple of years, with the release GTA 3, but that's a completely different story...

Cooperative game (from the English cooperative game - a joint game, abbreviated as co-op or coop) - mode computer game, in which several people go through the storyline of the game. When compiling the list, I used the help of the forum and the evaluation of the MobyGames website.
