COVER CLOTHES
The more carefully books are handled, the longer they live. This. It's clear. But even with the most careful handling of books, their covers gradually get dirty.
To prevent the covers from getting dirty, you need to make wrappers.
The simplest wrapper is a dust jacket.
Take a sheet of good, not very thick paper, about the width of the book, but long enough to wrap around the book.
Bend a paper valve 6-7 centimeters wide under each cover. Shape the valves with scissors. The dust jacket is ready.
Some books are issued by publishing houses in ready-made dust jackets - very bright, beautiful. At times, the contents of the book are reported on the flaps and excerpts from reviews are placed.
It is very easy to make a brochure wrapper. To do this, it is enough to take a sheet of paper, somewhat larger than the open brochure. First, the top edge of the paper is folded, then
lower. The folded edges protrude between the cover and brochure.
After that, the brochure is closed and the side edges of the paper are folded under the cover. Side
the flaps of the wrapper can be bent again (at the corners) - for accuracy, the wrapper is ready.
Brochure wrapping paper should be as thin as possible, but strong.
A thick book is a little more difficult to wrap.
First, the top and bottom edges of the paper are folded: along the height of the book cover. Then this paper is wrapped around the book like a dust jacket. The side flaps are folded under the cover (the book is closed). The thickness of this book is marked in the wrapper with two vertical folds, as shown in the figure.
After that, the book is taken out of the paper, and the paper is straightened. Scissors make four cuts in the paper. It turns out two rectangular tongues. They are folded over and an open book is placed on them. Then, the top, bottom and side edges of the wrapper are applied to the book cover according to the existing folds. The corners of all edges are carefully folded. Ready! The book is closed and put under load for a while: so that the new wrapper “gets used” to the book.
For such wrappers, light brown “postal” paper (kraft) is very good - dense, durable, fairly resistant to moisture and bright light (customized parcels are packed in this paper in post offices).
Just as good is the "marble" paper sold in school supply stores.
In general, paper in pleasant colors is desirable - not very light (so that it does not get dirty for longer), rather dense.
If there is nothing suitable at hand, you can take old newspapers for wrappers: in two layers.
The title of the book should be written on each wrapper. Author indicated.
Writing on wrappers is best ballpoint pens different colors. It can turn out very nice. If desired, a light paper rectangle can be glued onto the wrapper, on which to write the title of the book and the author's surname. Not bad if the title of the book is not only where the titles of books are always written, but also on the thick fold of the wrapper. Then the book will not have to look for a long time.
IN Lately Paper wrappers are being replaced by flexible (transparent, translucent and not at all transparent) plastic wrappers.
These ready-made wraps can be bought in stores.
But it is much more interesting to make such wrappers yourself: according to the format of your books. To do this, you need to take a plastic film: for example, a plastic shopping bag (they are sold in household goods stores) and cut out the desired rectangle from the film. Bend, as shown in the figure, the edges. And put the book into the resulting wrapper.
Glue for plastic film is not needed. It sticks together perfectly with a hot iron. True, you first need to practice a little on the scraps of the film. Recently, special devices for welding polyethylene films - "Lightning" - have appeared on sale.
The inscriptions on the plastic film are made with ballpoint pens of different colors.
It goes without saying that all book wrappers are needed primarily for books that are often used. First of all for textbooks. And for books that are issued from the library.
Books that stand for a long time in bookcases under glass hardly need wrappers. And dust jackets don't hurt.
