Leave the container to infuse for 1 week in a dark place. In a week the tincture will be ready. The roots in the tincture will swell and fill O higher volume than a week ago. The color of the tincture will become the color of strong tea leaves or like good cognac.

Ointment

Used for skin diseases, non-healing wounds, hemorrhoids, chapped lips. Take 5 g (1 tsp) crushed dry raw material and 1 cup cow butter. If it is not available, you can use unrefined vegetable oil. Bring to a boil over low heat and cook for another 5 minutes. Pour warm into a dry jar. Cool and store in the refrigerator.

Collection and procurement of raw materials

The above-ground part is harvested during the flowering of the plant. Harvesting of galangal roots can be carried out in September-October. Once you find a plant, it can be difficult to dig it up, since it has a rather large rhizome. Therefore, without a shovel you will hardly dig it out of the ground.

Having dug up the rhizome, clean it of soil and small side roots and wash it cold water immediately, then scrape off the top layer. It is advisable to immediately cut the rhizome into small pieces, since the root quickly becomes woody and then it will be difficult to finely chop it.

It is better to dry on fresh air, avoiding exposure to sunlight. Some experts recommend drying the root quickly, for example, in a dryer or oven, but at a temperature of no more than 60º. With rapid drying, they believe, more nutrients are retained.

Is it possible to grow galangal on your own plot?

Can. To do this, it is enough to dig up the plant along with a lump of earth so as not to damage the small roots. There are no special requirements, only the place where you plant the plant should be sufficiently lit, and the soil should not be too fertile.

Dear readers, today you met another medicinal plant– Potentilla erecta or galangal. If you notice this plant in meadows or forest edges, do not be lazy, dig up the root, collect the herbs of the plant, and they will provide you with invaluable benefits. Be healthy!

Advises herbalist and summer resident Natalya Zamyatina.

What does it look like?

Cinquefoil erecta is a small herbaceous plant that is found mainly in damp forest meadows, but can also grow in conditions of complete drought. It is not easy for an inexperienced eye to notice it among other grass, since the stems of this cinquefoil are very thin, the leaves are small, and the light yellow flowers are almost invisible: their diameter is only 6-7 mm. But they can easily distinguish galangal from all other cinquefoils (of which we have more than 140 in Russia), since the flowers have only four petals.

How is it useful?

Wild galangal is well known in folk and official medicine. It was widely used in the 19th century, then at the beginning of the last century it was almost forgotten, but in 1961 it returned to pharmacy shelves. A decoction, tincture, powder for powders, and ointments were prepared from the dried root.

Galangal decoction has long been used to treat stomach disorders. By the way, this is evidenced by another of the names of this plant - ovary root: it was used to “tie” the intestines during diarrhea. Vodka tincture taken before meals improves appetite. Therefore, galangal root was included in many ancient vodkas infused with herbs, for example, in one of the versions of the legendary “Erofeich”.

A tooth powder was prepared from a mixture of equal quantities of galangal powder, linden charcoal and gravilat root powder, which stopped bleeding from the gums, inflammation in the oral cavity and did not damage the enamel of the teeth. True, it was an unusual dark gray color.

And in Russian folk medicine, galangal was considered a herb of male power.

In addition to its medicinal properties, galangal was also used for dyeing and tanning leather. They also used it to tint vodka and sometimes wine a reddish color.

How to prepare?

IN medicinal purposes galangal uses a tuberous rhizome. It is almost black, pinkish-brown at the break, with a pleasant smell. By the way, cinquefoil is one of the few plants with an underground part that is used, which is more often harvested in the summer than in the fall, simply because flowering plants are easier to find in the grass. Although the old herbalists believed that greatest strength possesses raw materials collected in the spring.

Rhizomes measuring from 3 to 7 cm are harvested. Thin roots are removed, after which the rhizomes are dried at a temperature not exceeding 45 degrees. After drying, galangal becomes hard as a stone and cannot be cut, so to grind it, put it in a bag and break it into small pieces with a hammer. So that it does not evaporate from the rhizome essential oil, it is better to do this immediately before use. The pharmacy sells already crushed cinquefoil.

Moscow gastric vodka (an old recipe)
